This is a great book, and there are 3 in the series.

It is great for ages 5 & up, IMHO.

The library is full of them. It is the only way we cover science until late middle school or high school science.

This site has a lot of great suggestions for those unsure of doing it on their own:

I second the library. Also, Usborne, Kingfisher, and DK all have secular science encyclopedias that aren't bad.

There is a secular Living Science Yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LivingScience/). It was an offshoot of either the Living Math or SecularCM group, I believe.

Is there a particular subject you are looking for? It's hard to know where to start, there are so many books out there.

I'd second the recommendation for the "Born with a Bang" series.
