Hi-
My boys are really into mysteries after reading some Sherlock Homes and Agatha Christie stories........so we started watching DVDs with "family" mysteries (that means not too scarry or gross for their mom!) - we've watched some Columbo, Rosemary & Thyme, and Murder, She Wrote. We did some Hitchcock like Rear Window (which my boys couldn't believe I selected as it was so nerve-wracking to them!) So any other suggestions to watch on DVD from the library........

Thanks,
Myra

:iagree: I've read every one and the PBS series does a fabulous job with the visuals of the time period. The Cadfael series is also very good, but some of the themes may be a bit too mature for their age.

Since your sons have already read the Sherlock Holmes stories, I'd recommend the British series starring Jeremy Brett (http://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Sherlock-Holmes-Boxed-Collection/dp/B000060MVK) as Sherlock Holmes.

Our boys LOVED these BBC series:
- Sherlock Holmes series starring Jeremy Brett
- Poirot series starring David Suchet
- Cadfael series starring Derek Jacobi

They might also enjoy these BBC series:
- Miss Marple series
- Peter Wimsey series
- Campion series starring Peter Davidson

And what about these OLD, campy action/mystery series:
- Wild Wild West
- The Avengers

Thru the Hulu website, our DSs have also gotten a kick out of these modern day detectives (preview, as there is a bit of language and unmarried people sleeping together is considered the norm):
- Monk (Tony Shallub)
- Psyche (James Roday)
- Castle (Nathan Fillion) -- more mature material

As a family we were *riveted* last year by the "Foyle's War" series we got through Netflix -- set during WW2 England, each episode, in addition to the mystery to solve, shows homefront issues. Fascinating -- BUT -- mature themes, so I would NOT recommend for under age 13 or 14.

Happy sleuthing! Warmest regards, Lori D.

We liked Rosemary & Thyme, which is about two ladies (so your boys may/may not like it), one a landscaper and one a former constable.
