We already have McGuffey's readers and several from Pathway Publishers. Are there any others available? Thanks in advance -- any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

There are tons at google books that you can download free. Just go to google books and use reader or primer as your search term.

Not quite as old fashioned as Pathway or Elson and others, but we've really enjoyed the Ginn Basic Readers. Be sure to editions that are from the early 1960s or earlier. They have stories of children from other cultures; classic poetry selections; adaptations of the great literature; etc. This link takes you to a site with Ginn, but also other vintage readers: http://www.tagnwag.com/forsale/readers/

Enjoy! Warmest regards, Lori D.

Just another vote for Elson's. My boys have loved them. Fabulous selection of fables, fairy tales, folk tales, poetry ... all at appropriate reading levels, but never dumbed down. Can't praise them highly enough...

Oh, and Amazon carries them, also.

Here is a site where you can read full color and illustrated books online for free. It is in a very appealing format that is laid out in two side by side pages just like a book. You can also create your own books on that site. That might be a way to get your little one more interested in reading. It will take a little bit of Mom or Dad's help with the real little ones, but they have a demonstration on how to do it. Fun!!!!!

I also recommend the Elson Readers. We have several antique copies and I learned a few days ago that these are being reprinted. I'm chafing a little that I have already overspent my homeschool budget for the time being.

I adore Elson and Baldwin readers, but my absolute favorite is Stepping Stones to Literature by Sarah Louise Arnold & Charles Gilbert.

My dd was reading the little christian liberty eclectic readers. They had been so nice. She loved those.
