porta, portae: door or gate?

We're using Lively Latin this year and the vocabulary defines porta as a door. I'm thinking of moving to LFC next year if LL2 isn't ready.

In perusing the LFC sample pages I noticed that they define porta as a gate. Can someone with more latin knowledge shed some light on this for me?

In the Memoria Press series, porta is translated as gate, door. You use whichever word that makes the most sense in the sentence.
