I keep checking on the HS/college board....
I would like to know what your Dd (I think you said Dd!:)) said worked for her, and what did not. I understand all the differences of learning, but...for example, which writing program did you use?
Math?
You didn't outsource anything?! That is amazing! Something to be "darn" proud of!

Oh...Gee...what did this dd do??? Well, she was my late bloomer. She didn't read until almost 6. She was not a real book person until she was a late teen. I would say her High School was very eclectic, literature based, CM style. She used Apologia Science, Saxon Math and WTM style History/Geography etc. we used Ambleside Online, Beautiful Feet, Sonlight lists, ...and I mostly read TO my kids while they baked, played legos, knitted....
I am much more schoolish with my younger crowd because #1, I am not pregnant and throwing up...which I spent a great deal of time doing during my older 2 dd's schooling. I do not have an infant or toddler...so we are more schooly now.
#2 I was not working full time then, so we had time to read and read...and read.
Quite honestly, this child did not write a paper until 10th grade....when we did do 2 Brave Writer courses (oops...maybe I did outsource this one class) and I had her use an A Beka Text for Lit to learn literary terminology.
We always did...Grammar, Logic, Latin, orally...with all the kids. (Now we do much more individual stuff because, again...Mom time is minimal....sigh....)
This dd loves sports and health related things, so she did Swim Team, took life guard training and worked as a Life guard. She did Water safety Instructor courses through the Red Cross...she taught swim lessons...coaches a US Swim Team, worked in a Nursery School.
She has a rich extra-curricula life. She has a passion for the things she loves to do.
It wasn't until she was 17 that she discovered she really loves literature, philosophy and history. It wasn't until she spent a year at community college that she discovered what I was trying to accomplish in her homeschool years. We worked through English 101 & 102 as homeschool courses with the professor as her "coach" but with me doing the main teaching. She learned to write really well that year. Her Philosophy professor told me her papers were the best he had ever read in 20 years of teaching at the CC. I didn't have the heart to tell him she had NEVER done a research paper in high school, let alone an analytical paper. LOL!!!
She keeps blossoming and I am constantly amazed at her depth of understanding, her common sense and her desire to learn. She is thankful for homeschooling because she said it gave her the opportunity to discover who she was and follow her passions unemcumbered by peer pressure, "credits" or particular deadlines. While we were schooling, I really TRIED to have deadlines, exams etc. She could not handle that then...and I wondered if she would ever be able to handle it. She can and she does. She rose to the occasion as it became necessary.
She is graduating from CC in a few weeks and has not received a single grade below an A-. She took HARD courses because she wanted to. She learned sign language, took all sorts of religions of the world classes etc.
I will not be the least surprised if the Lord calls this child to missions work. She is SO prepared for that...but I forsee a bit of coming into it. I can just see it though....She is the right type for the Mission field.
Anyway, I guess what I would like to say is that it was not any particular program or curricula that got her to the point she is now. I think it was having a lifestyle where study and learning was of utmost importance, but the individual child and their needs always came first. I believe setting a tone of excellence and trying to pursue it gently and carefully....trying (but not always succeeding) to NOT drive them to wrath. Keeping MY expectations high, my motivation high, but not stressing them out too much.
I really think my kids succeeded in spite of me, not because of me. I Fret! I worry. I sweat....I read...I try and try again and again and again. I have tried pretty much every curricula out there looking for a magic bullet to make them smart, loving, God-fearing born again, holy rolling Christians on fire for God and quick witted , full of wisdom etc. I have high hopes and dreams for my kids. Really, what I want is for them to be fulfilled, happy and somewhat prosperous adults...without any harsh baggage, and without the struggles that my dh and I had to go through due to our own hard childhoods and difficult adult lives. I wanted to raise them up a notch...and have them go out and have an impact on their world.
The goal is not available in a curriculum or a program. Do whatever works. Try to figure out your childs bent...what do they love to do and how can that translate into a future? Make sure they learn to read, spell, write, do math no matter what they decide to do. Show them beauty...paintings, music, literature. Teach them there are harsh things in this world. Show the TRUTH. Talk...a lot! the talk some more...about everything. Help them make good decisions. Listen...listen...listen...read...read...read...re ad...discuss...solve the world's problems....
I am no expert on all this. i had an awful upbringing...and a pretty bad education....I second guess myself all the time. My kids are not where I would love them to be, but they are OK.... I am still here in the game thinking maybe I got lucky with the first 2?? Ds seems like he is going to do as well....but time will tell.
I wish I could write out a do this...don't do this list...but geee......wouldn't that be a bag of bs??
Welp, I think I am done rambling and reminiscing....Hope I helped a bit...
