Well today was my first day of doing Lingua Latina with my son. (In a previous post- I talked about how we were at a wall with Henle, and have now combined it with LL)

My son hated it! He was confused, and I did a bad job of helping him understand it better. I had preread the passage a gazillion times, but I still wasn't very good at explaining it to him. He wants to know why we just can't keep translating it, like we did with Henle. I tried to explain the immersion method, be he just wasn't jumping on board with me. He agreed to try this method with me , but if it doesn't go any better than today we're sunk.

Has anyone else switched methods midstream? How did you get your children excited about it. Actually, I think my ds liked Henle more than I did. Sigh, I was very excited and am working hard to try and not be discouraged.:tongue_smilie:

Being computer illiterate, I actually meant to post this on the high school site. I now have posted it there as well. Maybe, after I figure out Latin, I can figure out computer.:)

Did you get the CD rom? Maybe he can listen to the audio instead, and try to figure out what was said?

You did start with Chapter 1, did you not? I did translate this one when I started. I needed the crutch. I let go of translation bit by bit, not right from the start. Now I no longer translate (I'm in capitulum X)

What I did was work through the first three chapters with translation. Then I went back to chapter 1, and yup, I could now read it without translation .I added chapter 4, went back to chapter 2. By chapter 3, it was taking me more than one exposure to the chapter to 'get it'.

I usually work 2 or 3 chapters at the same time by now. One chapter to mastery, one to remind me of what I read, and one for exposure. Works for me.

Cedarmom,
Do you have the Latinae Disco (http://www.pullins.com/txt/LinguaLatina.htm#set_1)? It contains a wealth of information about each chapter *in English*.
My son's Latin teacher all but requires the reading of the corresponding notes before they begin a new chapter. And oh, what a difference it makes!

I hope you find success!

Thanks for the ideas.I just bought the audio yesterday. I am hoping this will help. Yes, I have the Latine Disco, but I think my son planned out his video games while I read it to him.:) Today I will just have him read it to himself, and see if it sticks better.

Some of it is personality. My oldest loves Lingua Latina. My second son HATES it. He HATES anything inductive. He wants it all logially spelled out. Asking him to figure out a word from context is like asking him to pull his own teeth.

I ended up dropping LL with him, in hopes that age would bring mellowness :)
