I'm looking at SOTW 3 for next yr, & PHP offers a discount if you order their whole kit & caboodle. Dh likes the idea of beginning testing in hist next yr, but he'd like to know if any of you all have seen the tests & liked/disliked them.

TIA!

I have used them and liked them. They are an easy way to see if the child has picked up the main points. The questions are well done in my opinion. It was a good alternative to narration on some weeks when my dd just wasn't into doing another narration. HTH

I have received my copy for Ancients to use next year. I've looked through it and like what I see!

How about along w narration? Would that be too much? Not nec. every week...it's just that...I guess...as much as I hate it (sometimes), I think narration is important.

Otoh, narration def lacks something, as far as checking retention.

I'm waffling. I love to order stuff, but I'm trying to be conservative in my spending. Around this time of yr, I always become *very* ambitious, lol.;)

We do narrations and I ask them questions from the activity guide but about every 4 weeks I use the tests to orally ask them review questions from the previous chapters. For every three questions they get right they get a Skittles candy piece!

That's the way to bribe information...:drool:hehe!

We use them and like them. They are not long at all. I like giving them so they can get used to taking tests of that nature. Especially ones I did not write! I have not done them with my little guy yet (he's 6) but my older one has been using them. I can't recall if we did them for the 1st set, but definitely through books 2 and now in book 3.

I got my test book as a part of a used bundle, and I wondered if my ds5(major history lover) could answer the questions(no pressure). I used it last week orally when we had our review week. He got most of the questions correct. I was amazed on what he has retained. So I thought I would use it for the weeks we review. Take the test orally and color the review card.

I have used them for SOTW1-4, but not as tests. My kids used them as review sheets and were free to go back and look up anything they weren't sure about. My kids were also older when they did SOTW.

SOTW1 - 9yo
SOTW2 - 10yo
SOTW3 - 11yo and 13yo (oldest was in ps the previous two years)
SOTW4 - 11.5yo and 13.5yo
