View Full Version : I want to try some new makeup. I'd like something natural and allergy-free.
Can't be outrageously priced either. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Molly

I'd gladly give you the bare minerals stuff that my MIL bought me. Except, she MAY ask me where it is when she comes to visit. I didn't like it. It was a nice powder, but didn't do enough for my taste. It also makes hair on your face more visible, if you have any. I don't have much, but MIL does, and when she wears it, it makes her look older.
I'm sort of looking for something new, too. Currently I'm using Avon, which works well on my very sensitive breakout-prone skin, but I'm sure it's not natural or allergy free.

My MK lady told me that before I put on the mineral make up to moisturize and then let the lotion set in for about 15 minutes, then apply the mineral stuff. You don't want to apply it to bone-dry skin, but not wet skin, either.

I'm not sure what 'outrageously price' is to you, so forgive me if my suggestion falls into that category.
I really like Bare Minerals. Applied with a light hand to moisturized skin, it gives a nice cover without looking thick.

I am not really sure if it is all that natural but they do have a nature theme to their products. Dr. Weil has his own health/skin care line with them.

I love Everyday Minerals, they have samples for just shipping (under $4.00) I ended up ordering some right away though. I use Eucerin moisturizer first and then apply everything else.

Just last night I saw a commerical where Mabeline has come out with a LIQUID mineral makeup. ??
I am also a fan of Everyday Minerals (http://www.everydayminerals.com/). They will send you a free sample. I am fair and used "Sandy Fair" in semi-matte and "Back to School" blush. The blushes are to die for! I have never had products that blend as well as Everday Minerals! However, there is a learning curve with mineral make-up. I use Silk Dust as a primer to fill pores, then apply a tiny amount of mineral foundation. THe result is a natural, flawless look that does not break out my sensitive skin!
My other favorite products are:
Good eyeshadow, powder and blush brushes. Target has these.
Tinted moisturizer from Sephora (http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P101301&categoryId=B70)
Time Balm concealer from Sephora (http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P20750&categoryId=B70)
Wonderful, neutral eyeshadow palette from L'Oreal (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=179641&catid=98578&cmbProdBrandFilter=53087)
Covergirl Professional Mascara (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=159612&catid=98577&cmbProdBrandFilter=2424) - this is great because it doesn't flake or clump and it stays on while still easily removed with water
I use L'oreal lip glosses or use the el cheapo brands over Carmex.
My everyday face would be:
Tinted moisturizer - Sephora 1--
concealer all around eye area - Time Balm
mascara - Cover Girl Professional and an eyelash curl
everyday minerals blush - 'Back to School'
Carmex or a nude gloss
For evening I wear Everyday Minerals foundation, neutral eyeshadow, line with eyeshadow using a brush )) a pencil liner. As we age, less make-up looks more youthful. Brushes are your friend! Run far away from those sponges that come with the shadows! LOL!
If I go to a really special occasion, I will take the time to do a Smoky Eye, and it drives my dh absolutely wild! More than you wanted to know, huh.
Have fun! As far as drugstore brands, I have found L'Oreal to be of consistent quality. Most of the el cheapo brands do not blend well, and can make one look very Old Lady.

I really like Aromaleigh (http://www.aromaleigh.com/index.html). They have natural mineral make up. They sell samples so you can try things out before spending a bunch of money and the prices are great.

On Saturday, I saw that Target had either Bare Minerals or Bare Escentuals in the store.

I need something new and love ~ made in the USA for things we put on or in our bodies. The sample is on the way:hurray:.

I have tried mineral makeup several times, but was never successful until recently. I decided that what I thought was oily/combo skin was actually dry. LOL
So, I purchased a good cleanser. I chose honeydew by Mychelle. I also use her fruit spritzer, eye cream and pumpkin moisturizer. It's fab. Then, I apply the Everyday Minerals powder. It's a great, though my pores seem larger than I would like. I don't know if that's because they are larger than I remember or if the makeup makes them look bigger. My dh is pleased with how smooth my face looks.
Good brushes seem to be very important for the mineral makeup. I also avoid bismuth and other chemicals. The Everyday Minerals are very clean, IMHO. I may have to try the Silk Dust to see if it helps my pores.

IMO, the nature theme is more of a marketing thing.
Burt's Bees products are pretty natural. Most or all of their products do not contain preservatives & stabilizers as do all the department store brands.
Philosophy's mineral makeup The Supernatural (http://www.philosophy.com/web/store/cat_makeup-foundations____24045_23506) rated well in terms of safe ingredients, though it's not necessarily "all-natural." I checked each ingredient on my package of Supernatural on EWG's SkinDeep (http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/index.php) site. But the price isn't that great.

Yup - I also learned that exfoliating a couple of times is a must. I had trouble with pores until I started priming with Silk Dust. I can literally fill my pores with the Silk Dust and then apply the smallest amount of foundation. If I use too much foundation, it does emphasize pores. Try using just a little and priming first - this worked for me!

I have always loved Clinique. An if you time your purchase properly you can get one of their free gifts which almost always includes stuff like lipstick and mascara. These freebies always last me a long time and make the prices of the other products very worthwhile. I have very sensitive skin and this brand has always worked for me. Good Luck!

Thanks for this. I have exfoliated, but my skin is so sensitive that it gets very red and inflamed, even with the Mychelle products. I'm going to try their blueberry antioxidant mask next. It may be a better product for me. I'll have to try the Silk Dust. My problem is that I have rosacea on my cheeks that I try to hide. I add more powder there to cover it and then my pores look larger because I've add more of the foundation powder to cover. It sounds like I have a little more experimenting to do!
