I looked at the sample. Here is the deal. Right now I have a 10 yo 5th grader going through LfC - A. I like it but we are going reeeeellllly slowly because ds needs so much practice to memorize the vocabulary and understand the grammar. Is L-A workable for him because the first few chapters should be review or should I just go on to LfC - B once he finally finishes A? What text is suggested after the L-A sequence?

You should just continue on with LFC B thru C and then switch to Latin Alive! If he is struggling with Primer A LA will be really tough, as it would be for most 5th or 6th graders. Last I was informed the plan is for there to be 3 upper level texts. I don't have an official word on what CAP recommends after the LA! series, but I assume students will be reading and translating original texts or doing AP Latin.

So does L-A take the place of say, Weelocks or something like that?

No, I wouldn't say it takes the place of Wheelock's, more like Henle. Wheelock's pace is really fast, chapter 1 covers 1st & 2nd conjugations present active infinitive, indictative, and imperative. Wheelock's goes through all the Grammar in one year, LA! goes through a good bit of Latin grammar in year 1, but year 2 and year 3 will add in more grammar. I suppose if I start my youngest with Latin in 3rd grade I might do this:

3rd - LFCA
4th - LFCB
5th - LFCC
6th - LA!1
7th - LA!2
8th - LA!3
9th - Wheelock's
10th - 12th - Original works or AP Latin

I do see a value in going over the grammar at different levels, but right now for my older two, especially my ds in 9th grade, I'm hoping go right to AP Latin from LA! 3.

Actually, Latin Alive! is meant to take the place of Wheelock for younger students. Instead of learning all Latin grammar in one intense college course, Latin Alive! will spread the same lessons out over three volumes. Our teaching strategy does differ from Wheelock in that it targets students in the grade range of 6th - 9th (may vary depending upon student). Wheelock is really meant for first year college students. By the end of the series students will be translating unadapted original Latin passages. It is our hope to follow this series with a reading course that provides a wide sampling of original Latin works. By reading course I mean a course that focuses on reading Latin Literature. After this students would be ready for an AP course. So, I would modify Karen Ciavo's projected course with only one slight amendment:

3rd - LFCA
4th - LFCB
5th - LFCC
6th - LA!1
7th - LA!2
8th - LA!3
9th - Reading Course
10th - 12th - AP Latin

Of course, if you feel your student would benefit from a year of intense review with Wheelock after LA! - go for it. But, you don't necessarily have to include that in your cursus vitae. The finished LA! series will include all the Latin grammar you should need.

Blessings,
Karen
