View Full Version : Ack! Corned beef disaster!!!!!

Okay, so I poured a bottle of Very Dark Beer over my corned beef. I have it on the stove because I didn't start it early enough for the crock pot. I started doing something else and didn't realize the heat was up so high and the beer evaporated and there was this dark burnt stuff on the bottom of the pot.
So guess what I did?
Poured water in. So now the meat is simmering in burnt beer.
And it's still tough.
And dinner is in an hour.
Can we just eat scones for dinner?
Maybe I can drive down to Ms. D and eat her leftovers?

Take it out. Put in fresh beer. Do you have a pressure cooker? That would hurry it up quite a bit!

Throw in a few whole, peeled potatoes to remove the burnt taste after you switch pots and add more beer like Jean said. Don't eat the potatoes. Fish them out and throw them away when the food is done cooking.

I also have corned beef on the stove for dinner. I hope it tastes better than it smells! I have never had it before.:001_huh:

Thanks, ladies!
I put a whole potato in. The meat is getting more tender already. It should be ready to eat in a few minutes.
Thanks again!! :001_smile:

did your family like it? my family hated mine. I'm going to be eating leftovers by myself for a while. I don't want to feed it to the dogs . . .

"Mom, we're not Irish!" my dd 9 said. "We don't like it."

Yes, they actually really liked it. It came out pretty well after all. The veggies were a little bland because I couldn't cook them along with the meat, but it was tasty otherwise.
Oh, and Mrs Mungo: it is a major big deal around here. My mil will want to know if her boy got his corned beef and cabbage, let me tell you. Pulleeeze!:tongue_smilie:

:001_smile: It is epic--what to do with all the leftovers?! I bought a 3.5lb corned beef roast.
ds 5 - "Mom, this meats really got alot of fat in it."
dd7 - "Is this beef? Then we're eating cow, a really fat cow."
ds2 - (turned his head and refused to eat)
dh - "Is there leftover egg salad from today for my lunch tomorrow?"
dd9 - "Do I get any dessert if I eat all on my plate tonight?"
My mother suggested freezing the rest and she kindly volunteered to take whatever I can't personally finish home with her when she comes next week for a visit.

Ah, then you blink and say, "Mom, do I LOOK Irish to you? I mean... [puzzled look]?"
:hat:
Corn beef and eggs. That's what you do with the leftovers. Oh. My. Heavens. Comfort food extraordinaire.

But oh, my dear...one woman's St. Patrick's Day corned beef and cabbage is another woman's New England Boiled Dinner. And we ate it when I was growing up there. I've been cooking this dinner for about 20 years and this is the first time I messed it up. Oh well. It worked. :D

Good on ya, *anj*! I must confess (lordy, I sound like Barak Obama!), I've been "blinking" at my MIL a lot lately. Sigh.

Some mils have a way of doing that to a person, doncha think?
Sometimes a highway that only goes in one direction is a thing of beauty. I love mine, but it's nice that she's not so, um... convenient. :D

Corned beef does make some pretty good sandwiches. Even my family who does not like "corned beef and cabbage" itself, does like the sandwiches. Maybe having it in a sandwich tones down some of the saltiness.
P.S. My MIL who is Filipino, is very insistent on having corned beef! My family (who really is Irish) could care less! Go figure. . . .

:grouphug: Oh Anj, it appears you've graduated from my school of disaster cooking! I'm so sorry - I do this kind of thing all the time. What did you end up doing (obviously I haven't read the other posts)?

Wellll...
I poured off some of the burnt beer and added water in an effort to sort of deglaze the pot. I added a bay leaf, an onion, one whole potato and some garlic, then I let it simmer. It really softened up within about an hour. I had to cook the veggies in a separate pot, though. All in all, it could've been a lot worse.
Thanks so much! Don't we all have one of those disasters sometime? I'm glad it worked out, but for awhile I thought I'd need to run out for some deli corned beef, you know? ;)

:001_wub:Oh my!!!!! You didn't go to my cooking school at all. In fact, I think you might be my husband, the chef. But, you're probably not my husband since he's been asleep for the past three hours. :001_smile:
My general remedy is to panic and *err* call my husband and then make him talk in "stoopid-chef" talk to help me fix it. I keep hoping I'll get better as the years pass, but I haven't.
Great save!!!!! What time are leftovers for lunch?

Thanks!! It worked pretty well. There is only enough left for about one sandwich, so I guess they liked it, eh?
Oh, and my husband's been asleep for about 3 hours too. This reminds me of Doran's thread from a couple of weeks ago. I will regret this in the morning, but right now it's soooo nice to be in a quiet house! http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/computer005.gif (http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/%5Burl=http://www.freesmileys.org%5D%5Bimg%5Dhttp://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/computer005.gif%5B/img%5D%5B/url%5D)

I'm glad your dinner came out better. We're up for chicken pie at lunch time, today. Next year, hand dH the beer and call it a day. Lotsa love, D.

I know! Isn't that the funny thing about it?
His dad was Italian, and he most closely identifies with that.
But his mom, being Irish, wants to assert herself. The strange thing is that she mostly waits til St. Patrick's Day to do so. So all year long it's "Where's the brasciole, pasta fazoul, feed me pasta 4 days a week" but then for ONE day the Irish eyes are smiling as they gaze on soda bread and corned beef.
Too funny!
