My senior needs a non-lab science credit finished before May. She will only be doing Al 2 and the science from Jan to May 2010. She is deciding between astronomy, earth/enviromental science, or ecology.

In the past, she has loved reading through DK books and Usborne books on her own. Do you think it is possible to use a DK book,a Wiley self teaching guide, some DVD documentaries, and assign written papers for a full credit?? The DK book would be our spine and I'd jump off from there. I don't think she'd have any trouble reading, watching, writing, and discussing 150 hours worth for a credit.

I did find a few textbooks, but she really doesn't want another textbook. She wants to finish her high school career loving learning!

I think she is leaning towards astronomy and SWB recommended the Wiley Self Teaching Guide in the 1st ed WTM.

She will be an art major, english minor.

What do you think? How would you beef up a DK book for high school credit?
Thanks,
Pam

That sounds similar to the recommendations in the WTM (second edition). I think the only other thing the author adds to that are a couple of additional living books. For example, if one studies astronomy or physics they could read Stephen Hawking's book: A Brief History of Time (which is very readable btw).

Yes! Last year from Jan-May middle ds used DK's Universe: The Definitive Visual Guide, The Story of Astronomy, and George’s Secret Keys to the Universe. For constellation reference we used DK’s Children’s Night Sky Atlas and a pair of nice binoculars.

He also listened to some of The Modern Scholar- Astronomy: Earth, Sky, and Planets from the library and watched some videos from the library.

I gave him a 1/2 credit in Astronomy.

oops

I should have said that we added this to WP S&S, so he also used Galileo for Kids, Exploring the Solar System: A History, Don't Know Much About Space, and Constellations for Every Kid.

OK.. I went back and read about astronomy in my WTM book. I decided that the Wiley Self Teaching Guide would be our spine, we'll use that DK book with all the pretty pictures, watch some documenatries, add in some writing, illustrations and a reserach paper and we'll have a nice WTM style astromony notebook that will be worth a full credit. I'll count hours to make sure she has worked 150 hours.

Thanks all!

More questions coming along..... I'm planning next semester!:001_smile:
