Not a Game: Deck or Patio?

Dh and I have been talking about this, he prefers a deck I want a patio. A big one. With half walls surrounding it, with room for a table, chairs, sitting area, hot tub (down the line) grill etc.

What do you like?

I like patios like what you describe. Decks are nice, but don't they require treatments of some sort every year so they don't rot?

I'm with you on this one. I'd also want a built in fire pit, too.

We had a patio at our first house, deck with railings at our second, and we're now at our third and seriously considering a railing free deck, possibly with a bench/storage seating around part of it.

You can buy composite decks which have minimal upkeep from what I've been told.

We have a patio/porch, and the porch roof is *very* useful providing shade. We can use it many more hours because of the roof. However, if it were on the other side of my house, the roof would not be as useful, due to the angle of the sun. The roof is probably as expensive as the floor or deck material, so it depends on the $$ and what the roof would buy you in functionality.
