Can't answer you about FLL, but R&S English begins in grade 2.

I transitioned my older boys from FLL to R&S grammar 3 without any problems. Some of the definitions between the programs are slightly different, but it wasn't a big deal. I think there could have been some different terminology used, but I may be getting this confused with another program; it's been a long time since I've seen FLL. I'm getting ready to dust it off again next year.

You can go from FLL to R&S 3 without so much as a hiccup.
With my daughter we ended up quitting FLL after the first grade section of the book and just going with R&S 2 for grammar. The heavily scripted layout of FLL was not a good fit for her.
I do believe it is going to be a good fit for her younger brother and in fact, I may just stay with FLL with him, provided PHP keeps cranking out more levels!! I cannot see R&S being a good fit for him, ever. But I digress.
All that to say, R&S grammar begins with 2nd grade. I believe 1st grade is just a reading program. (Someone correct me if I am wrong, please). And you can indeed transition from FLL to R&S 3 easily.

You are correct. R&S focuses on reading and handwriting in the first grade. Spelling and grammar/writing begin in second.

You'd to into R&S3 after FLL1/2.
If you're planning on doing FLL3 before transitioning, you'd go into R&S4.
Shouldn't be a problem either way.
