My oldest was dx with Asperger's last December. He is now 8 1/2. He also has severe ADHD. We have resisted medications up to this point and have continued to seek alternative treatments - gf/cf diet, omegabrites (fish oil), no sugar/dye/nitrates/nitrites/etc..., plenty of physical activity, and now we are in our 6th month of neurodevelopmental therapy. So far nothing has made a significant difference for us and in the last year the emotional aspects have increased a great deal. He just cannot cope many times - lots of breakdowns and anger and sometimes just sadness that he cannot attribute to anything in particular.

I know of three Aspies who really took a downward turn (emotionally speaking) once puberty set in. I am starting to think this is much more common than I have ever realized and feel like it is time for us to medicate. If we can get a handle on some of these emotions now maybe we can avoid some of the heartache these other families have experienced.

Puberty is hard enough on a typical teenager...for these kiddos I know, it has just wreaked havoc. I would so appreciate anything you are wiling to share about your experience to help my husband and I make the best decision we can for our son. Thank you in advance.
