There has been a trend with my youngest. She doesn't do things until she is ready/wants to do them. She waited until she was 15 months to walk. When she was not speaking clearly we took her to the ST who said that she has no real problem beyond lazy speech.

Now, she speaks fine. But she didn't learn to count beyond 10 until she was almost 7 (I started working with her in preschool but didn't push, used Kumon, Earlybird and Rod and Staff stuff).

She knew most of her letter sounds at 2 but she is in 2nd grade and she still can not read. We used Rod and Staff Reading 1 starting in K and supplemented and switched back and forth between it and SWR. I've also added in sight words and we've struggled through the first 3 readers for R&S last year. We did the HOP level 1 readers as well.

She sounds out a word and will remember it while we are reading but the next reading session it will be gone. The same thing happens with math, she'll know 2 plus 2 is 4 while we are working on it but if we don't do it every day she loses it.

Is the knowledge just falling out of her brain? Should I be concerned about a LD? I mean today she couldn't read "is" and she has known that word for a couple of years.:bigear:

Sounds like LD and motor weaknesses to me. I would pursue testing with an occupational therapist and an educational psychologist.

You might find these websites helpful:
www.dys-add.com
www.mislabeledchild.com (I highly recommend the book, too.)

I don't think a child would delay walking or speaking clearly due to being stubborn. Nor do I think "forgetting" simple words or sounds would be due to laziness or stubborness.

I would look into an evaluation for motor issues and LD.

I do think it sounds like you need an educational evaluation with at least an IQ test and an achievement test. You've listed 3 milestones (walking, counting, reading) that were late in coming. With a 2nd grader who can't read, it's a great time to find out what exactly is going on.
