View Full Version : College Acceptances and/or Scholarships - Class of 2010

Having read the thread below where acceptances and scholarships inspire those with younger students... should we list acceptances and/or scholarships on a thread for those that want to read it? I debated... but here's mine:
Senior son looking to go to a Christian school with plans on becoming a microfinance manager:
Applied and accepted to:
Covenant College (GA)
Union University (TN)
Calvin College (MI) (though acceptances at these latter two are not official until they get the ACT scores we just sent - formality at both)
Merit scholarships offered so far include:
$8500/year to Covenant college
$8500/year to Union U
Both of those with the 'chance' to qualify for more this coming winter and each additional year pending on a minimum GPA.
He did not apply anywhere else so we are merely working on scholarships.

Excellent idea - and those are GREAT Merit scholarships!!! :) I'll stop my thread below and use this one, too. Everyone else - post here as you get those acceptance letters! We can edit/update our posts, too, without making new ones as more acceptances come in.
DS so far (he applied to 11 colleges)
Carthage College (WI) -$42,000 merit ($4,000 more if he interviews for Honors in Feb.)
Montana State - Bozeman - $24,000 merit (both here and Carthage is trying for Honors Scholarships, too.)
Ferris State (Michigan) UPDATE 11/11 - Ferris just offered two scholarships - one gives in-state tuition (almost $20,000) and the other, merit-based, is $22,000 total.
Augustana College (IL) - $66,000 -

DD just got accepted to Cedarville University (OH) with an $8000/year merit scholarship. She plans to major in nursing and minor in music.
Cedarville was her first choice (big sister is already there), so she was holding off applying to other colleges since she was pretty sure she'd get it. She's been taking a course online from Cedarville this semester and plans to take another next semester. She has a chance at another small scholarship based on her performance in these classes.
Congratulations to all!

My dd has applied and been accepted to:
Union University
U of MS
Belhaven College
She was told verbally she qualified for Union's top merit scholarship...but stopped the process when she realized that their program *really* is *not* what she wants. She is no longer pursuing Union *at all*.
I don't have the letter in front of me, but Ole Miss has offered her full tuition and room based on NMSF status alone. She was told VERBALLY that she qualified for a merit scholarship that paid room/board/plus a stipend and sent an app to fill out for that. Also, if she is a NMF, she will automatically get the same plus a possible study abroad stipend...so this is all still in process. She also needs to do her piano audition.
DD's top choice is Belhaven College. Based on her test scores and GPA, she has been awarded their top merit scholarship of $9,000 per year. She performed her piano audition yesterday and did fabulous! We were told she should hear back soon from them re: a music scholarship and that we will be pleased. Belhaven is a private school and does not fund based on NM standing, but they would accept a scholarship from the NMSC. This school is the PERFECT fit for her program-wise as well as size, opportunities for playing etc....so we are beginning to realize that *free* isn't always the *easy* choice. :)

JFS - That is wonderful!
Are those scholarship amounts for the first year or for 4 years? I am not sure how colleges offer these scholarships. I have a junior and will need to understand this very soon.

all four years - the $66 from Augustana means $16.5 per year for four years, for example. So ds still has to apply for more scholarships for most of these places

This is a fun idea! I am encouraged by seeing how our homeschooled students are faring.
My son has been accepted by LeTourneau University in Longview, TX. If he makes the leap from NM Semifinalist to Finalist, LeTU will offer a scholarship equal to tuition for four years. WE would be on the hook for room and board and tavel, etc. Still, $10K a year is more doable than $30K!
He is in the process of applying to a variety of other colleges and universities. We discovered the University of New Mexico at a college fair. Verbally, the recruiter has told us that ds is eligible for a full ride based on his status and scores. We will see!
WE are out the door - more later!

Congratulations April. Letourneau is 15 minutes from my house and there are lots of professor families in my homeschool co-op. My children have gone to academic camps there and my dh has helped out with their prosthesis(sp?) program a little. My children will take some of their dual credit classes there. It's a great school.

My daughter has applied to:
Grove City College: northwestern PA. She has applied Early Decision, we'll find out December 15th. Based on her ACT scores, she qualifies for their only merit scholarship ($5000), but there are only 25 available and a large % of applicants also qualify. Grove City says that their low cost (about $20K per year for everything) is actually a "scholarship" for everyone.
Samford University: Birmingham, AL. This is her back-up school. Once again, her ACT scores qualify her for their highest scholarship and she has been invited to apply to their University Fellows honors program which also has scholarship money involved. Unfortunately, scholarship decisions aren't made until Mar. 1st, but we've been assured verbally that she would get a good amount.
King College--Bristol, TN. Her back-up, back-up school. It's close to home and has a good amount of scholarship money available. I highly doubt that she'll end up there, though.
I can't wait to finally find out Grove City's decision. It's really the only place she wants to go. Luckily, she had a great interview, and that's a big thing with them. On pins and needles here!

Wonderful! Congratulations, everyone! My son's first round of apps. are in and the deadlines are all December 1, so I'm hopeful that we will have some info soon, too!
It's sort of funny, one state school to which he applied has already sent him a "certificate of acceptance", and we haven't even sent them his ACT scores or transcript yet! They don't have an early app. date, so we didn't think we needed to be in a hurry about it..... (Sorta scary, isn't it?)

DS is working on one more application and has several other schools he's waiting to hear from. Some should come in December, some in January and some in mid-March.

Thank you.
DS, for those that don't know broke his leg and tore knee cartilage 5 weeks ago in a skating accident, is healing. One month down and maybe just 3 to 5 more months to go. We are now taking things a week at a time. A little more than a week ago he was finally able to stand and move about without pain and has permission to sometimes put 50% of his body weight on his leg. He started PT last week too and has regained quite a lot of flexibility in a short time. The PT has been a riot to work with. They were excited to start working with DS since a tibial plateau fracture like he has is a rarity. We also learned that DS has 2 fractures on the plateau, torn ACL, ruptured IT band and a number of other tears. His attitude through this has been fabulously positive.

Wonderful news, Carole & son!! Yay for the early acceptances!
Rose Hulman is an excellent school - we looked into it for my son a few years back. I know of one homeschool dad/engineer who graduated from Rose and has only good things to say of his experience there.
My dd pushed the button on her fourth application yesterday. She has to finish the Common App supplements on her final four by the end of the month. She'll hear back from her first three schools in two weeks (biting nails here!)

This was last year, but I don't think I posted it then. Thought it may help someone to know about it this year.
Meghan was awarded a full ride (tuition, room, board, books) to Arizona State University based on her National Merit status. She was accepted into Barrett Honors College (www.barretthonors.asu.edu/home/) which affords many extra advantages like priority registration, a beautiful (and delicious) dining hall, new dorms, special courses, classrooms, and advisors just for the Barrett kids. Also, it's easier to get overrides for more credits per semester and they can take graduate level or law school courses as an undergrad. They also get the plum internships and on-campus jobs. She is teaching a regular tutoring course in her field as a Sophomore making $10 an hour. It's a pretty sweet setup.

Irony is Grand Valley called ds a couple weeks ago - they had not yet gotten a transcript. DS had decided, since a few other colleges had already ACCEPTED him, not to pursue GV, as it was a back-up school anyway. He TOLD them on the phone that he was no longer interested in applying!
Turns out GV contacted ds's high school counselor and requested the transcripts AFTER the phone call.
I tell ds it must be nice to be really, REALLY wanted by these schools!!!;)
I assume it is the "homeschooled 3 - 8th grade" part that makes him look so good!!!

Dd is applying to seven schools, so far have heard back from two:
*Belhaven, with the highest level merit scholarship like MSPolly's dd, plus an art scholarship. There may be more if she is accepted into their Honors Progm, but don't quote me, as I don't remember.
*Hardin-Simmons (a close-by Baptist college, which would make seminary an easy transition for her). She has been accepted, given their Trustee's scholarship ($11K/year) and invited to apply for the Honors College, which would be more $.
*Biola - pending
*Messiah - pending
*University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (not finished applying)
*Ouachita (not finished applying) should be very close to a full tuition, if sources tell us correctly
* She could also have full tuition at our local UT campus, which is accredited by the NASAD, but they don't have a psych program she is interested in, much less religious studies.
Time will tell! :)

My son was accepted to Cornell today, early decision. Phew! It was his number one choice and while we knew it was likely as he is a recruited athlete, it is so cool. We did a financial pre-read and they are going to be very helpful in paying for his education, need-based only as they do not do merit or athletic money.
We homeschooled all along and he had no AP classes, a few on-line honors classes and solid but not amazing ACT scores. No dual enrollment but any of those things would probably help. So moms and dads with kids with a strong EC like a sport, it is worth it. Swimming opened many doors for my son....he was strongly recruited by 2 ivies along with several other schools.
Now we have to figure out what to buy...we live in FL and he lives in shorts and flip-flops!

Hi Carole,
My husband and I both graduated from Tulane. DH actually got both undergraduate and graduate degrees there for a total of eight years. In fact, DH was born and raised in New Orleans.
Both of us have good memories and still think highly of Tulane. The academics are good; the classes are small or medium and taught almost entirely by full professors. Tulane is a wonderful size: large enough to be diverse and offer a wide range of programs/majors/classes, but small enough for a student to feel comfortable and plugged in.
The BME program has always been an outstanding one. DH was a biology major, and he knew quite a few people in the BME program. Our sense of Tulane's engineer programs is that they are extremely rigorous but excellent.
The city of New Orleans is an important part of the Tulane experience, and one that I really loved. The food, music, and architecture are truly unique and a bit of an education in and of themselves. ;) There is, however, a crime problem in New Orleans (and was when we attended school there in the 1980's). This would not stop me from sending me own child to Tulane, but I would definitely send him or her off making sure that they have to be very safety conscious. Living on campus is quite safe, in our opinion.
Tulane has experienced a positive renaissance since Katrina, and has become extremely service-oriented. Volunteering is now an actual graduation requirement, I believe.
The school has long had a reputation for heavy drinking. I think it goes with the city. This was definitely the case when I attended Tulane, when Louisiana was one of only three states where the legal drinking age was only 18. :001_huh: (Now it is 21.) Drinking was never a huge draw for either DH or myself, and we skated through our years there drinking very, very little. We had friends there who did the same. But we also had friends and acquaintances who seemed to drink like fish. I suppose one could see that at many, many universities.
Carole, what does your son want to do with a BME degree? I know there are many options. :)
Please feel free to e-mail or PM me if we can answer any additional questions. We'd even be happy to talk by phone to you and/or your son if you are interested. :001_smile:

Kathy,
I can't think of a better validation of homeschooling than this. Wow. I'll be praying for you and your family that the financial aid works out so that your dd can choose her best option option out of so many great choices.
Merry Christmas!

DS received an email from Tulane University --- accepted :)
To date that's:
Tulane University
Rose-Hulman
Drexel, Honor's College w/ scholarship
CO School of Mines
The other schools do not announce merit aid until March, IFFF he gets merit aid.
Still waiting to hear from his safety school (the one that wouldn't send him or us into too much debt and his 4 dream schools...) Those should come in between January and late March.
Carole
Add in that from the snail mail package arrived from Tulane University. DS was named a Tulane Scholar which comes with a nice scholarship for each of the four years that would cover about half the yearly expense :)
He also was accepted to Case Western Reserve. We're waiting for their snail mail package.

Congratulations to all from me as well! I don't always post to try not to overclutter this thread, but I'm certainly celebrating with y'all and looking at the multiple possibilities that are out there for my other two to choose from when their turn comes. It sure seems to me that homeschoolers can go anywhere their talents lead them.

Hi Lynn, thanks so much! Just saw your question - we've been enjoying having our ds home from college amidst the first big Richmond snowstorm in a long while:-)
My dd wants to study pure mathematics, with side interests in art and Latin/classics. I hate to hazard a guess about why she's having such great good luck so far. It could have been just the opposite - we feel blessed and a bit lucky!! She did have great standardized testing scores (national merit level, but not perfect), lots of SAT Subject tests and a whole lot of AP tests with nice results. She self-studied most of her courses at home with a little outsourcing from PA Homeschoolers, Stanford EPGY, Write at Home, and Art of Problem Solving.
Her applications painted a pretty good picture of herself: passionate math geek (lots of math classes, traveling math team, competitions, summer math camps galore, math tutor, MathCounts coach,...) and energetic kid (taught a class at camp last summer, editor-in-chief of camp yearbook, art enthusiast, dancer,4H'er -I wish I had her energy!). She had a couple of outside teachers who loved her to write her rec letters. Her application essays were her true self -she was so honest in them that I cringed a little, but I guess they liked them?
Now we have to get back to work while we wait for the rest of her results to come around April 1. Financial aid will also be a big factor in her decision-making. But I just want to say that while she's accomplished, she's just a kid and far from perfect - she spends way too much time on facebook and thinking about boys:). She'll be happy wherever she lands next year. I'll be the sad one who will miss her terribly!

Kathy, what a great and transparent post! :) I think I "hear" what you're saying . . . great scores and lots of effort (from SAT Subject tests and AP test), but also just a pretty ordinary young lady in lots of ways. My oldest has heard back from two schools so far---Truman State University, in Kirksville, MO, and the state school which is closer to us: Southeast Missouri State University. Truman is a very highly-ranked public university, and would be my personal preference for her. She did get a $4,000/year merit scholarship from them, but they have other scholarships they'll be handing out in the early spring. She got a Regent's scholarship from SEMO, which covers all her tuition. She's also applied to Washington University, St. Louis University, Central Missouri State University, and St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. She also just completed a vocal scholarship application towards the latter, which we mailed off; she'll also apply for vocal scholarships at SEMO, Truman, and Central Missouri. St. Olaf is a really good college; I grew up in Minnesota, and if I could do college over again, I would go there! My daughter seems to want to stay in Missouri, which is fine with me, but she's applying to St. Olaf, just in case. :) I don't know where St. Olaf shows up on college rankings; I've seen the US News & World Report ranking of universities, but not colleges. At any rate, besides having a music program (choir, orchestra, etc.) that is really like a conservatory in stature, they also have very strong math and science departments. I can't find it on their website, but some literature that we received from them seemed to indicate that their math department was ranked third in the country---but I'm not certain if that ranking was in comparison to other colleges or colleges/universities in general.
Also, the campus is beautiful---old stone buildings covered with ivy, lots of trees and grass, etc. It is expensive, though!

Just wanted to add that dd got another "fat envelope" yesterday from Messiah College in PA, also a great pick for her b/c of the accredited art program and, in particular, b/c of the very interesting approach they take to experiential service learning--they are very focused on having students learn to integrate their faith and learning, then apply it in a hands-on way. (Run on sentence, anyone?)
If I were the one going to college, I'd first move the school from PA to somewhere warmer, then I'd get another undergraduate degree.
She also received a hefty scholarship offer (> than the other one), but their Honors program may be more competitive. I wish she'd had her nicely formatted vita done when she applied. We'll see if they invite her to apply for it.
Thanks for listening! (It helps to celebrate a wee bit after working for another hour or two on the drudgery that is pulling together early financials for FAFSA...)

Any recent additions to your ds' list?? You guys are amazing...I can't believe the choices before him...how will he ever make up his mind??? Once again, you both are incredible!!
It's been so much fun reading about all the things our kids are doing and where they are considering going. In my dd's case, the two most recent acceptances are perfect for who she is, so we are overjoyed. The other choices give her a range of very "safe" schools financially and geographically, and were she in the honors programs, she'd be in good company.
Congrats to you and your ds, and may the New Year bring additional great news!

We need to see where the financial aid comes in and like many other families weigh the cost. He applied to schools he could see himself attending and they are all great choices.
I wanted to mention that we have friends whose DD attends Messiah College. She's now a Jr and loves the school. English/writing major. Very friendly to homeschoolers too.

aren't they a hoot?!?
Dd has been so high-strung about opening *her* mail (I mistakenly opened 1 (one!) acceptance letter, before we were supposed to start having them arrive) and she was extra sensitive about it. I slit open a couple of her letters just to tweak her a bit last week. ;) (All but one of the acceptances is in; now the envelopes are just misc communications, until late Feb/March when we'll start getting yeahs/nays on the Honors programs.)

They are a hoot. One of those thin envelopes DS received in was from one of his accepted to schools. They increased his merit scholarship! He was happy and I was happy I hadn't opened it. We've been getting communications regarding submitting FAFSA even with estimates (we have) and open houses for accepted seniors. If I knew the winter weather was going to be good I'd sign DS up for a few trips however I'm hesitant to plan ahead for February to drive to NY or Ohio or IN. ahhh, mail is coming..... :)

I hate it that I don't care for college students' general appearance and demeanor these days. One of her classes that she sat in on was excellent (church history), but the art students--oy--what an unkempt bunch, and I'm a jeans and sweatshirt gal! (The art faculty seemed rather casual as well.)
I realized today that I am comparing today's college world to mine, and since I went to what is arguably one of the best of the best Cxn colleges, it is hard to send dd to look at something that I *know* isn't what I had.
I did ask herself if she could imagine herself there, and she said she could, which has been a real struggle for her at the state uni. She wants to be with peers, and at the uni, the vast majority do not have share the same passions. If she were passionate about art, it would be the uni, hands down.
We will see at least another 5 campuses...dh is taking her to CA.
Congrts on the most recent thin envelope!! I'm glad to hear this is modus operandi! :)

Time to update ds's list:
DS so far (he applied to 11 colleges):
Carthage College (WI) -$42,000 merit ($4,000 more when he interviews for Honors in Feb.)
University of Minnesota- Twin Cities - ACCEPTED!!! No scholarship info until March, though. He should get some merit, at least.
Augustana College (IL) - $66,000 -
Illinois Wesleyan - $40,000
and just now two big fat envelopes came...
Wooster - Ohio $69,000!!!!!
University of the South - Sewanee- TN $48,000 (ds calls this one "Hogwarts" since our visit. Looks like H., and Honors kids and many professors wear black robes!!!)
yet to hear from...
Vanderbilt

Ohhh... Wesleyan just called ds asking if the FAFSA had been filed yet (it was yesterday) - they told him they have more money to give out and he is one of the top students they want for the class of 2014. That gave ds a boost!!!

Just received the acceptance letter from University of Delaware and DS was accepted into their College of Engineering and their Honors College. We knew DS would get into U of D but we weren't sure that he would get into their Honors College. :) They do not award merit scholarships until mid-March or early April.
Case Western Reserve with a Provost Scholarship
Tulane University -- named as a Founders Scholar w/ merit scholarship
Rose-Hulman **
Drexel -- Honors college w/ scholarship
CO School of Mines w/ merit scholarship
** wait until March to announce merit scholarships.

Congratulations to your son, Carole!
My son's letter from College of Wooster arrived today with a handsome Dean's Award.
I was teaching a sewing workshop to some homeschoolers when my son phoned me with the news. All of the Moms of younger students are always so relieved to hear that homeschooled students they know are not only accepted to college, they are also offered generous merit awards.
Exciting stuff.

Congratulations to you and your son Jane! When I lived in Ohio an engineer friend was from Wooster and then he interviewed for a job in Worcester, Ma. It was funny trying to teach him the proper way to pronounce Worcester after all those years in Wooster.
So much good news floating around here. It is exciting stuff!

Thanks Kathy, Karen and Carole.
Most of the colleges we looked at had much later application deadlines than US colleges, they just say they'll let you know by x date.
Funny thing about Dalhousie, though, is that they sent her a letter dated December 24 stating that they wouldn't consider her application until after receipt of her mid year grades -- well I haven't sent them yet, but dd's letters of recommendation arrived there ~Jan 21, the admit letter was mailed Jan 25.
It was really good to receive this today as dd spent from 4-11 this morning in the emergency room with a very nasty GI bug -- she's home now but must see her own doc on Monday. Prayers for healing will be most welcome.
The acceptance today really gave her a boost -- somebody wants her and it isn't just her Mom.

dd heard today that she has been admitted pending final grades to McGill in Montreal with a major renewable scholarship. McGill is her heart's desire.
She received the news in Children's Hospital Boston where she'd been since Monday night -- scary at the time but fortunately she came home today and doing well.
She'd joked on Tuesday that if the emergency room was worth admission then being in the hospital should be worth admission and a scholarship.
She says she's not sure she wants to hear from her 3rd application...:)

Jane,
DS visited some friends in Carlisle Friday / Saturday. They are hs'ers who live in Carlisle. Saturday morning the kids walked around town and all around Dickenson's campus. DS who does not like cities or towns told me on the way home that he really liked Dickinson's campus and expressed that he wished it had a chem e program. He enjoyed walking around Carlisle too. This from a kid who rarely likes a college campus and I think this might be the first town he has enjoyed walking.
Just thought I'd share :)

My daughter was accepted yesterday to William & Mary as a Monroe Scholar. It comes with a small research grant, special freshman dorm, seminar series, and some other stuff.

She wants to illustrate childrens' books, and a focused art school is very much up her alley. We've had some problems with the local state school because she didn't have enough foreign language on her transcript--my fault, which we meant to take care of senior year via the community college--but couldn't get in due to overcrowding. Art schools don't care...and they have really good industry connections. However, we may defer a year and let her spend a year at CC getting more confident in herself & her independence. Still debating that one.

My dd was accepted this week at Stanford and Princeton, & wait-listed at Swarthmore. Needless to say, we're still in a state of shock and happiness for her.
Even better, for those who know me from WTM, is that my husband found a new job after a very long and worrisome eight-month search. After wondering all year long whether or not we'd be able to afford college at all, it now looks like dd can make an informed choice without worrying too much about the money.:). The schools she's most interested in attending also provided us with the best need-based financial award packages.
Now we're making travel plans to visit her top three colleges...she really is torn between a few. All through high school she has wanted to go to MIT, but around last November, she started having second thoughts about what she'd have to give up at a tech school (she loves the classics, Latin, art, dance), so she added in a more well-rounded college or two at the last minute. Now those colleges are serious contenders!
We'll have a fun time in April watching her make up her mind:glare:.

GREAT!!! My ds was just rejected by Vanderbilt (a long shot to be sure) and University of the Pacific - they, along with V. , wrote they had over 20,000 applicants!!!!!
So he was accepted (and scholarshipped*) at 9 of the 11 places to which he applied. We wrote a letter pleading for more aid to one school - once we hear back we will know if ds is going there** or to the school that offered enough aid to go below the EFC. I am so glad this is almost over!!!!!
* I love making up words.
** per suggestions here, we included in the letter the fact that the other school had offered more ... since the schools are rivals.

Good news for your whole family! We too have gone thru the job thing about 3 years ago. I cannot imagine both college search and job search stress simultaneously in the home.
My son is coming to the decision that he is a more well-rounded student with many interests as opposed to just the techie guy ... part of me is glad to know he realizes that too. I see his decision on the horizon.

Thank you all so much!!
It's been a real roller-coaster ride this year with dh's job search and dd's college application process all coming at once, and we feel very blessed at how it's all finally working out. Like Susie's son, I think that my daughter is coming to a realization that a broader-based education is right for her, but she needs a few more weeks to come to terms with that choice.
Now off to organize these final campus visits...I'll let y'all know how it comes out:)
Good luck to everyone else in the process. I hope your children find their own perfect fit somewhere and that the finances work out, too.
