We were really having some concentration issues during school this morning. I was reading a passage about early American history and could see that ds's mind was wandering. After reading a sentence that said a 13 yo boy's father had died on the voyage across the Atlantic, I stopped waiting for ds to realize I'd stopped reading. I asked, "what do you think of that?". He looked at me and smiled and said, "that's really cool". OK, we know he wasn't listening at all at this point. I asked him what he was thinking about. I knew it wasn't American history. He said he was thinking about:
"Penguins. Penguins and baboons. And they were running!"
 I couldn't help but laugh!

 Well, maybe depending on what part of the Atlantic you're in, you might possibly see penguins. Not sure about baboons, but hey, you never know. :D

My dd's like that too. Her mind wanders almost anytime I start talking about a school topic. She even wrote in her journal under "What do you find boring..", "when people talk". Is your son receiving any tx for this? Just curious, as dd is going to doc this month.

No, no treatment yet. We are going to have an evaluation through our Intermediate School District soon. Unfortunately, our doctor wasn't too much help, other than validating that yes, he's got some sort of processing thing going on. We do suspect dyslexia and possibly adhd. I'll let you know what we find out :).
It's frustrating, but when he comes up with this outrageous stuff going on in his head, sometimes I can't help but laugh! I do have to say, it surprises me how much he retains, even if he can't convey it to me at the time asked. The things we've read and talked about will often come up in his play, so I know it's sinking in somewhere!
I can't blame him. Some days I would rather think about penguins and baboons too. ;)

It's laugh or cry sometimes! :001_smile: Good luck finding ways to help him. It seems like a big ole runaround sometimes. :grouphug:
