Our intentions are to send our oldest, currently 12yo in 7th grade, to our local high school in 9th grade. They offer Spanish, French and Cantonese. The Cantonese is offered only as a second second language.
Ds completed 3 very light years of Latin (3rd-5th grades) and 2 light years of Japanese via Rosetta Stone.
He struggled mightily to learn to read and wasn't really fluent and on grade level until about 5th grade. Now, as a 7th grader, he's a good reader, decent writer, and adequate - but not really good - speller. Foreign languages have always been difficult for him, particulary vocabulary retention.
I'm trying to determine what to do for a modern language to prepare him for a high school language course. My thought is to transition into either Spanish or French 2nd semester of 7th grade, giving him half of 7th and all of 8th to complete a beginning Spanish I or French I.
Can you recommend a middle school Spanish or French course that will give him decent preparation for high school. I've been eyeing SOS Secondary Spanish/French and the K12 middle school programs. I think theirs used to be called Power Glide. I need something that will drill the vocab relentlessly. He has good grammar skills, understands the parts of speech.
Any advice?
Thanks, Stacy
