My dd is working through ABeka DVD's for high school. She's taking Algebra 1 now and doing well. Her ambition is to become a writer or something along those lines. She is not interested at all in anything math or science-related. However, she wants to take her SAT's and work through a traditional college-prep high school program.

ABeka's math offerings after Algebra 1 consist of Algebra 2 (Honors) and Plane Geometry (Honors). Math electives are available, but they won't prepare her for the SAT (business math, consumer math, etc.). My question is, since she's not very mathy and not an honor student, what should I do? We could take one of the math electives in 10th and go with a different publisher for regular geometry, not an advanced geometry.

Help!!!! What should we do? And what do you recommend?

Where do you get the indication that Abeka's Geometry is Honors level?

Many texts can be used as either regular College Prep or Honors. The Honors designation may come from doing extra homework problems, certain chapters that are more in-depth, adding some extra projects or presentations, etc.

I have just started tutoring a student who is using Abeka's Geometry text. So far, it looks like a pretty standard Geometry text (although I don't care for Abeka's style in general).

In their regular catalog, it doesn't say honors, but on the video order form, it says honors in parentheses after the listings for Algebra 2 and Geometry.

Maybe it's an option they offer? I'll have to ask them I guess.

Anyhoo....if I had to base my opinion of their Algebra program on the book alone, I would agree that I don't like it. But the video teacher is wonderful, and my dd is doing beautifully with it.

Thanks!

Sounds like maybe the video instruction (and possibly assignments that go along with it) make it an Honors level course.
