I was all set to do Apologia next year but now, I am considering this avenue. I am not a science minded mom and when my daughter gets stuck in science I have a hard time helping her to make the connections. We are currently using Apologia physical science. If she gets stuck with BJU, we can email the teacher. Also, having someone that knows what they are talking about teach science, may help dd make the connections better. Also, my dd is not crazy about doing the labs. It is my understanding that they do the labs right on the T.V.

So with this in mind, I am wondering if this would be a better road for us.

Can anyone who is using the program, tell me what it is about and do you think it would work for us?

Thanks, and Blessings!

I don't use it yet, but we are going to in the fall, for the same reasons you listed. I am really looking forwardd to using BJU! I hope someone who is using it can answer your questions.

I love it. We are using the DVD's with Mr. Harmon. The textbook is wonderful, but it is so nice having a knowledgable teacher expound on the concepts so that the student really understands them. I plan on using the biology course next, and I know that there are ladies on this board who have loved the biology as well.

I want to say that the fifth and sixth grade science classes on HomeSat are wonderful!! The teachers do the experiments right on the screen, and the camera zooms closely in. They do a great job of explaining the concepts. There are graphics to reinforce what the teacher is saying. I'm very pleased with the HomeSat science courses and hope to use them (at an accelerated pace) through the upper levels.

This year my oldest used BJ Earth/Space Science with the DVDs. I have been extremely pleased with the content and how well my dd has learned the material. (FWIW I'm not easily impressed!) I don't believe she would have gotten anywhere near the same benefit if I had tried to use it without the DVDs. She has done most of the experiments, but it was very beneficial to see them done first on the DVD and then to attempt them on her own.

Next year she will be using BJ Biology with the DVDs and my two youngest will be using the 7th grade Life Science with DVDs.

It was also nice to have everything planned out for me. The lessons, assignments, quizes, test, experiments are already planned. Minimal planning on my part -- at least for this subject!

Michelle, how long does it take your student each day to complete science? Also, I am assumming that the DVD's are the same course as the satellite? Thanks for any thoughts you have.

Blessings!

Well, it usually takes her between 45min - 1 hour. Sometimes if she is doing a more involved experiment she may spend more time, but that doesn't happen very often. She alternates between 4 days/wk and 5 days/wk.

I don't know if you have done this, but you can go to the BJ website and watch sample lessons.

It takes about an hour, to an hour and a half a day. We take lecture notes as Mr. Harmon teaches. Then, we make sure we read the textbook section and answer questions. Labs, and tests are separate lessons.
