View Full Version : Life of Fred and Singapore?
I am very intrigued by the Life of Fred samples, but I'm not willing to give up Singapore. If I wanted to add Life of Fred:Fractions to Singapore, what level would it fit with? DD saw the samples too and really wants to try it.
Does anyone do this? How is it working?

We haven't used Life of Fred yet but I have the algebra book and it looks very good. I would recommend starting as low as possible in the series. I think it would work best as a review or supplement. We will be using algebra as a review this summer.

I have LOF-Fractions for dd10. She enjoyed the bits she read initially, but I admit that we haven't pulled it out again. Actually, I'll thank you here for reminding me that I own it! :D
Claire, could you explain what you mean by "start as low in the series as possible"?
Mamagistra, what level of Singapore is your dd using? Did you stop using LOF because the novelty wore off? Does it add anything to her math studies?

I own L of F fractions, decimals, and algebra 1. I've been comparing the alg 1 to Jacobs. They cover pretty much the same material and LofF has better explanations as to why.
I think Fred starts out fun, but it quickly becomes material that makes you think and dive pretty deep into the math.

I emaild Stan, the author quite a bit before I bought any of it, he said if the kids have basic math down solid start with Prealgebra, otherwise, fractions, decimals and so on. My 9 year old daughter has been working on the prealg and fractions, loving them both along with Teaching Textbooks Math 6. She would definatley quit TT if I would let her, she loves LOF, and seems to be "getting it" particularly the algebra, so far there has been nothing new in the fractions book, so I will see how it goes if anything new comes up.
I would encourage you to email him and ask where to start based on your situation.

I just meant that you should start with the first book in the series, which is Fractions, and I see from your original post that this is what you were intending to buy anyway.

Dd is currently in 5A, but I purchased both LoF Fractions and Decimals last year when she was in level 4. She never continued in LoF simply because I never scheduled it. I was pregnant, and we were definitely on a light schedule. ;) Thus, I can't say if it added much of anything to her understanding of math.
Perhaps I'll break Fractions out again this week and see how it's received. If I see some fruit, I'll be happy to post about it. :)
