My dd will start 9th grade next fall. We are members of a hs co-op and she will be taking
British Lit using Lightning Lit 1 &2
writing with WriteShop 2
grammar with Analytical grammar but will do over 2 years

I also plan to do vocabulary, root studies, spelling (very weak in these areas)

OK my question - will all of this count only one credit for English 1 or can I break it up into 2 credits one being the writing/grammar and the other Literature?

Thanks
Susan

You could, because certainly it will add up to a lot of time. I plan on at least 120 hours for a credit, not including reading time. But be aware not all colleges will look favorably on counting it as two credits, if you don't have English credit every year.

How much time does she spend? I usually figure 50 minutes, 5 days a week is worth 1 credit. (that is approx. equivalent to what it would be in a public school setting) It sounds like with the amount of work it would be 2 credits.

at the high school level, it is assumed that each year includes literature, writing, grammar (if needed), and vocabulary (spelling is not usually done as an official subject/part of English in high school, which does not, of course, mean you shouldn't work on it).

With WriteShop I think at least 1 hour to 1 -1/2 hours 4 times a week then the class on friday will be 1-1/2 hours so a minumum of 5 -1/2hours a week to 7-1/2. This class will run for 28 weeks

We will be doing British lit 1 &2 next year and I think it will also include writing and projects plus the reading so I think it too will take us 5-1/2 hours to 7-1/2 a week

I was thinking the Writeshop with grammar and vocabulary could count as English 1 then the British Lit as a separate credit?

So far I have just always rolled everything English related into one English credit per year. I have not had any reason not to and I do such a mishmash of things that it is just easier on me and I know we have done more than the minimum required.

That being said, had I been able to homeschool my second child through high school, I am sure she would have had writing electives for creative writing because that is the way she is wired. But it would have been over and above all that you listed for English.

This is what we have done too.

Susan,

I think you have enough work for two credits. However, you could call your entire course an Honors English 1 course. My umbrella group does weighted grading, so a grade from an honors course would be higher than a college prep course. But you could go either way just fine.

Thanks! When I compare what see will be doing to what I did or see in the PS it would be a honors class!

Thanks again, with starting hs next year I know you will hear from me again!!! I appreciate everyone sharing their knowledge!

I agree that doing all of that could constitute an Honors English credit or 2 seperate credits.

I didn't do any grammar this year, but focused on writing, vocabulary and literature...........and it is still considered English. I was told you don't have to do all of the disciplines every single year to be considered an "English" class.....

It looks like a heavy workload, but English is usually pretty time consuming. It looks like one credit in our house.
