We sent 3 of our kids to parochial school this year. DH forced DS3 to go because he is shy and DH thought it would do DS good. I was 100% against it. I negotiated a concession: to let DS decide at the end of each grading period whether to come home.

Meanwhile, the school has not been a good fit for DS, primarily because he has as yet undiagnosed Aspergers or Nonverbal Learning Disorder -- he has been tested by the PS but they don't know what is wrong with him, but suspect it may be one of these two things. We are going to have him tested elsewhere.

The parochial school will not give DS an IEP, so his school will not make any accommodations for him, even though the problems are obvious, as are the solutions. It has been like beating my head against a brick wall to deal with these people.

DS cannot make a decision, so I bought a few books, went out to breakfast with DH, and he came around to my point of view: that DS is sinking fast at his school and needs to return to homeschool for his mental health and for his education.

I came home and told DS that since he can't decide where he wants to be, but keeps telling me he hates that school, that we decided to pull him out. DS has trouble with change and that's why I think he was willing to go with the flow.

Well, DS just looked at me with a big smile and said, "What took you and Dad so long to decide that when I've hated going there all year?".

He was delighted. I am delighted.

Actually, I am beside myself with joy.

I'm so happy for you!

It probably helps your DH, knowing he tried, to be confident that this is the right decision for that DS.

Congrats to DS and you, RC! Thank goodness he's confident in his decision and DH has agreed to bring DS home. When will he withdraw?

Enjoy the time and good luck to DS,
Tracey

He's coming out this week, between Monday and Wednesday.

He's the kid who got clobbered with a bell by his brother and lost teeth a couple of weeks ago.

Report cards came out yesterday, but his grades are all incompletes because he has to make up a few tests. He'll do that early next week. He wants to go to school on the days he has to make up the tests, instead of me bringing him to school just for the tests.

We need the report card for our school superintendent.

Today we figured out his schedule according to his needs, which revolve around sleeping late and watching Red Sox games. So he is going to get up at 9:15 a.m. and start his schoolwork at 10. He chose his schedule, but I made sure he put each subject at the same time every day because he needs the consistency. I also chose the subjects and how long he has to spend on them each day.

We also figured out that he can read his books by himself and does not pay attention when a teacher (even me) reads to him, that he thinks making his own flashcards helps him learn (he got that from the parochial school), and that he prefers to write the answers to review questions (his brother answers orally).

Oh, I am so excited. I've spent the whole afternoon planning and have shopping carts at CBD and RR nearly ready to go.

You all are so sweet to be so supportive. (I knew you would be.) :001_smile:
