Hi Nicole,

My son is reading The Return of the Native. When I searched these boards to see if anyone had commented on the book, I found your recommendation for the Alan Rickman audio book. Oh my! Seriously, this guy could read the phone book and it would be wonderful. Perfect diction--great characterizations.

Thank you, thank you! I shall enjoy listening to this book as I traverse the byways and knit.

Oh, I'm so glad you like it! For some reason, reading Hardy "with my eyeballs" (as my kids say) is too depressing, but reading with my ears is a whole 'nother thing. In fact I've wondered about starting a thread about this, asking if other find that a shared experience of a book changes your ability to cope with difficult themes.

My boys and I still quote lines from the book, in our best Alan Rickman imitations. No joke about the phone book!
