X-post: Public colleges/universities in Georgia... Where would you go if you wanted

...to earn a B.A. in music, if your plan was to use your music for writing & performing Christian praise/worship music in retreats/camps/etc.?

I'm asking this on behalf of my son, who is a sophomore music major contemplating a transfer from his small, private Christian college to a state college or university in Georgia. You might have seen my post earlier this week where I mentioned that the music department at his college is being eliminated as of the end of Spring Semester 2010.

ETA: He really wants to stay in Georgia. Besides, we don't want to deal with out-of-state tuition.

Not answering your question, but posing one of my own. Have you considered ORU in Tulsa? It is a smallish Christian college with a huge emphasis on music. It is very homeschooler friendly, offers very good scholarships and is located in a nice community (Tulsa is a nice town). Many of the private music teachers my sons took lessons from were graduates of ORU. It attracts a diverse population so it's not a problem if you aren't of their religious persuasion. Tulsa and the surrounding area have produced a great number of musicians/bands. Just an idea :-)

I can't answer your question either - esp since I'm not a music person. I can say Covenant (GA), Union (TN) and Belmont (TN) all are Christian with what are supposed to be good music programs. My pastor's daughter went to Belmont and is doing very well after graduating.

I have no idea what types of scholarships they might offer to transfer students to try to make it affordable compared to state schools.

Have you thought about contacting Shorter? (didn't they offer him a scholarship earlier?) When I attended, I knew several transfer students who had scholarships. I think they have added a band program since your DS applied, too.

But, public...IDK...I would look for a place that offered Master's Degrees in addition to BA's.

Shorter did offer him a full-tuition scholarship, so we'll have to check into that to see if the offer is still good. I'm pretty sure I understood them to say that it was good for two years, which isn't up yet. We visited at Shorter, and it was nice, but ER said he just wasn't comfortable there. Maybe things would be different now, a year and a half later.
