What do you like/dislike about it? If you know, what model do you have? (I've seen DC07, DC15, DC17, etc. -- I think these were all called the Dyson Animal.)

Most importantly, how well does it really pick up pet hair? We have two dogs and the sole reason I want to buy a Dyson is because of the claim that it removes pet hair so

Thanks!

I can't remember what number it is. It is the one where the top half rides over a ball joint, then the bottom part. Sort of like a leg over an ankle over a foot. It's point was supposed to be that manuevered around corners better. I actually DON"T like the ball part, and so I don't recommend that one model. It does indeed get around corners in a better or different kind of way, but it causes extra effort and energy to make it happen, and so I feel like I'm fighting with it too much, especially in my wrist, keeping the top half steady and balanced.

That being said, I LOVE the suction on the thing! It definitely is superior to other vacuums I've owned. I feel "happy" after I've vacuumed, since it seems to complete the job. Other vacuums I've had aggravated me b/c when I was done, it still seemed somewhat incomplete.

FWIW, my parents have 2 large dogs (a sherpherd and a poodle mix), and they have the Dyson "Animal". They like it well enough. I would say it does the best job any vacuum is going to do. There's always going to be that fur that just sticks down into the fibers of the rug or sofa or whatever, which don't want to budge out, even for a vacuum.

GL! It's a weird and hard decision to figure out which to buy! Let us know what you come up with....

I've been very pleased with our purple animal model. It's pretty amazing. And I love the feel of my in-laws' Ball model.

The only difference between the animal and the regular model is an attachment that has a rotating bar for picking up fur. It's great, but I don't use it very much. Not much fur in places where I'd need it. Excellent for stair, though, so probably worth the extra money as we've definitely got fur-covered stairs on occasion.

It's very light, very easy to empty, and compared to our old Kirby, it really cleans. Dyson sucks! :thumbup1:

We've had the purple Dyson for 2-3 years, and we've got a long-haired dog. It works great. I've been happy with it since day one. It sucks up everything, and I like the color.

It is just ok for me. I like how much it does get up the hair....but the things I don't like are:

The attachments are very hard to use while you are vacuuming....

I think the vacuum is HEAVY. Pam is obviously a much fitter woman than I, LOL!

For quick use of the attachments....you have to unwind all of the cord (A minor quibble....but it irritates me none the less, LOL!)

I like a vacuum that you can switch over to attachments easily....and this vacuum is not easy to do that....

Thanks for taking the time to tell me about the Dyson. Now I need to get to the store and compare the ball version to the others and also see if I can lift it up. Many thanks!!

The thing is, I rarely have to lift it, I only have to push it!

I've had a Dyson, thanks to these boards, for a couple of years now. I also have a cat and one very large black dog. The Dyson is amazing. We moved a couple of months ago and our new home has a built in vac. I tried it twice and then went back to my Dyson.

I don't have a problem with the attachments; I've actually found them pretty easy to use. Our new home has carpeted stairs - a first for us - and I love the rotating attachment for the stairs. It's fantastic. I actually find it pretty easy to cart around as well. The handle on top makes it easy to pick up and move. I grew up with a big electrolux, so I find the Dyson light : )

The Dyson is definitely near the top of my favourite WTM purchases list.

I personally think they are over rated. I borrowed a friends when we were looking at new vacuums. I found it awkward to use the attachments, which is what I use a lot, I can't stand not being able to get up next to the baseboards. I ended up going with a Eureka Boss because it was 1/2 the price, and rated higher in consumer reports. We have a cat and it does a great job picking up all of the hair, plus it does not lose suction, it does have a bag.

You're right that Consumer Reports does NOT like the Dyson. Their issues are price, noise (which I didn't understand), and suction (which I definitely didn't understand).

I compared mine with the one they considered top at the time ('04? '05?) and didn't get their rating at all. It honestly puzzled me.

But you are not alone in your evaluation. I wonder if each person's "history" with vacs makes a difference. I used a heavy, LOUD!!!!, messy, smelly, and if-we-had-bought-full-price ridiculously expensive Kirby for 19 years, so maybe that colors my review.

I have a Dyson. I like it! I was surprised with Consumer Reports not liking it. The noise is definitely way less than others I have used. I have 2 cats and it seems to do quite well. It works well for me!

:iagree:I have the purple one and I love all the attatchments that came with it. The suction on that thing is nice. I enjoy using it when I clean my car also!

I just got a very basic one a couple of months ago & I really like it. I think I"m going to buy the tool that allows you to easily vacuum under furniture, but other than that I'm completely satisfied. I bought mine at woot.com for $225 shipped--they just had another one the other day so if you're willing to wait a month or two you could probably get one through them.
