on a good book? We've done Power of a Praying Wife and Power of a Praying Parent.
This was the e-mail that I got about interest: Has anybody mentioned wanting to start a women's bible study or maybe just small get together where we would discuss, the good and bad(meaning situations where one might struggle) that comes with being a parent and teaching and raising your children in line with the bible etc.
So anything that included parenting would be a plus, but I don't want it to be limited to that.
Suggestions???
Thanks,
Kristine

I know you said not specific to parenting but I found the best little book on discipline.
It's called Don't Make Me Count to Three.
Don't have the author's name at the moment but it's a very biblical - apllicable book.

We're doing this one now:

I have to say it's been pretty life-changing for me. It's helped me to really take stock of some issues that were just never addressed. We've got a lot of great discussion going on in our group, and that helps, too.

A Woman After God's Own Heart, by Elizabeth George
This one is not about parenting, but it is a book that changed my life. It does have a chapter or two about parenting as it relates to a *Mother* and parening, and as a *Wife* and parenting, but it is not necessarily about discipline.
I read the book without a group, and didn't have the study guide. It can be used either way. I would love to have discussed it with a small group as I went through the book.

A friend of mine wants to start a study on Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit by Teri Maxwell.
I just finished reading it, & while I didn't nec agree w/ everything, I've found many of the ideas really helpful, & I think they'd apply to non-hs'ers as well.

any of the bible studies from Beth Moore or Nancy Leigh Demoss. I especially like the "Lies Women Believe" study by DeMoss!:001_smile:

We had a lot of enjoyment and education from "Character Matters!" by John and Susan Yates. Good focus on raising children in faith. There are discussion questions and bible verse references in the back.

is currently finishing "Daniel" by Beth Moore. I have to say, it's powerful and really, really good. It's challenging, spiritually, and a little challenging to our outlook on life in general.

Oh yes, chiming in here on both counts! Beth Moore is the only one I have used--we've done about 6 of her studies. Breaking Free is an excellent study that addresses the things that keep us from experiencing God's benefits for us--it's great for all women.
NLdeMoss has a bunch of really challenging, wonderful studies also. Seeking Him is my favorite.
Seems so often, women get dry in their spiritual walk and need refreshment. How wonderful you can offer them a chance to renew--it leads to better parenting in the end! lol
Anything by Kay Arthur. She has a "Lord" series that might be just the ticket for you. I don't tend to like "women's" studies, because I feel usually take too many liberties with the text. Women's studies usually tend toward "self help" type topics, rather than verse by verse exposition with serious scholarship.
Kay Arthur's studies are the exception. She really teaches you to study the Bible for all it is worth, saving application for after you have done careful observation of the text. This is really a blessing when compared to all the predigested, emotion-driven studies out there. (Boy, I sound like a fuddy-duddy! :p
As far as a book, I recommend a little 100 page book called "The Attributes of God" by AW Pink. God-centered and powerful!

I second this one! (Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World) We're also doing a beth Moore study, and it's good.

"Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World" by Joanna Weaver.
We did her second book last spring. "Having a Mary SPIRIT.' (Emphasis mine.) You can download a study guide from the website so each woman can have a notebook.
We enjoyed the book a lot. We had some good discussions and lots of laughs, too. Not as challenging homework wise as a Beth Moore study, but interesting and compelling.

Or I second A Woman after God's Own Heart and anything by Nancy Leigh DeMoss.

How about reading through Proverbs and discussing them? There is a wealth of parenting instruction in that book.

I'm always one for going straight to the bible so Proverbs would be my suggestion as well. I did like Teri Maxwell's book as well but I don't think I'd consider it for a women's bible study.

I second, third, fourth and fifth that opinion. She is awesome. My favorite is "Breaking Free." Be prepared to cry like a baby while trying to write down your answers in the book.
Blessings!

Ditto. Our small group really enjoyed this study. We also enjoyed Becoming a Vessel God Can Use by Donna Partow. This fall we will take a long, hard look at ourselves as we study, Respectable Sins: Confronting the Sins We Tolerate by Jerry Bridges.

It's a novel written like a diary starting at age 16 and goes through until her death. The writer managed to show how how we feel inadequit on the inside, while on the outside all that shows is our continued development as Christian Women. Trials, disappointments, and sorrows along with the joys of motherhood and marriage matured the character into what I would someday hope to become.
It could make some good discussion but it wouldn't be a long study.

"Growing Kids God's Way". However, it is by the Ezzo's, whom a lot of people on this board (including me) don't agree with. I haven't looked at this book though to have an opinion on it. As we all know, just because there is disagreement with something (in this case a publication) doesn't mean everything by that person is bad. So I wouldn't dismiss this until you've personally looked at it. Jmnsho.

We just did this book last month for our women's book club at church. It was fantastic. We could easily have discussed it for much longer. It would be good for maybe a six week study. This is one of those books I will read yearly.

Someone may have touched on this, but over the years I've sort of found that actually studying the Bible is more helpful than studying other books.
I love the Bible studies by John MacArthur. They really get you into the Word, and what's learned there is applicable in all sorts of areas in life.
