My kids are in 4th and 7/8th grades this year. So technically next year my daughter will be starting 9th grade.

For now we tend to do 4 days a week for 1-2 weeks out of the month due to educational field trips.

How different is the workload in high school?

I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind about this. Do you still do one math lesson at a time? Do you cover more history or science?

I know about the required credits for each grade. I don't live in a state that requires any kind of record keeping so I am assuming that each credit equals X amount of hours. How do you keep track of hours?

I really would prefer my daughter do high school at home but on the other hand I get nervous when I read some posts that I am missing something.

High school at home is definitely do-able and rewarding, but it does take considerably more time.

Science textbooks have a lot more chapters to cover/year, so that almost has to be done 5 days a week with some studying on the weekends. Just like real school I assume. Math too has longer lessons. Most math lessons, and I've used a variety of books, take one hour. History requirements for us are about the same as middle school. Reading/lit takes an hour/day.

We have a "shorter" day each Friday. On Fridays we have a 2 hr lit class, math, science and Spanish.

Probably it all depends on what you use. My high schooler has to study on the weekends and does a 5 day week. I've heard of several people here that do manage 4 day loads.

It's true that Science is probably the biggest load, and our Spanish class is moving at a pretty good clip, too. I think if you are willing to assign some work on Friday mornings and put in some long hours Monday-Thursday, you will have minimal time requirements on the weekends. I warned my son that "this is high school, and it is okay for you to have work assigned on the weekends." However, so far, it has been very minimal. Example: this weekend he has to review his Biology chapter so that I can quiz him on Monday, and he needs to read a chapter of the "What Color is Your Parachute? For Teens" book. Of course, he did a few hours of work today, total, but it was still lighter than our Mon-Thu. schedule (but some people find that to be pretty brutal).
