I recently watched North & South on DVD which is set in a cotton mill town in England--loved it. Is there anything comparable set in the US about factories, especially around the turn of the century?

Thanks!

It details the meat-packing industry around the turn of the century. According to Wikipedia, "Upton Sinclair [who was a socialist] titles his book The Jungle to make a specific criticism of the capitalist system. The mechanization of American society was supposed to bring progress and increased order. Sinclair, however, notes that this increased industrialism has had the reverse effect."

The Jungle was made into a movie (silent) in 1914, but from what I've read, the film has been lost.

That was on our required reading for hs & I've re-read it as an adult. It's a good story, though may turn you off eating meat for a while:001_huh: When published, it did have the effect of cleaning up that industry.
