Dd will be 8th grade next year. She hasn't done any TX history and I thought it would be good to have her do that next year in 8th grade. I am not wanting that to be our whole year of study, though. It will fit in nicely with the time period we are doing, so I was thinking of having her spend one day of history per week working on TX history. Is there anything that would be good for this? I know Switched on Schoolhouse has TX history (I think). I'm considering it because I want it to be something she does on her own. I also have found one that is more of a unit study type thing, but I'm guessing it would be more involved than I'd want for 1 day per week. I want nothing that I have to plan myself...it just won't happen if I do it. Any ideas?

I know of several sites that your dc could go to . . .

I'd be willing to look at some sites. My goal, as I said, is to do something that won't wind up being me planning a bunch of things for her but her taking it and studying TX history more on her own, as a side thing. I likely won't do any grading, just discussing and maybe a few papers and projects here and there.

Thanks,

Teresa

We're just going to do some field trips (San Jacinto and perhaps the Alamo) and read a couple of Landmark books that I found: Up the Trail from Texas and Remember the Alamo, along with the chapter on Texas and Mexico in SOTW Volume 3. I figure that since we live here, it should be no problem to pick up on the major points without going overboard. ;)

My kids are younger, though. YMMV. :)

For any state study, I highly recommend State History From a Christian Perspective (http://www.statehistory.net/). It is wonderful. There are few different options available to complete this program, you can do a 30 day, or 10 day, or other options. I think your child could do this with minimal help from you.

Tine - Thanks for the link. I went to the hs bookstore yesterday looking for TX history curriculum and didn't see anything I like. State History from a Christian Perspective looks perfect.

Thanks!

I just met these folks this weekend at a convention, and they are wonderful. We will be using their states curriculum next year here.

hee hee-- i was gonna say that A Beka's State Notebook is a handy little book, lol! I see it's recommended on that site. Very Cool.

We tried out the SOS for North Carolina history and I hated it. It wasn't user-friendly or very adjustable for someone just doing state history once a week or something like that. It constantly was mad because her assignments were "late" and it was just very cumbersome when using it for only one subject. I don't have much advice on what *to* do but I would advise against the SOS route.

The Bob Bullock museum in Austin is awesome for Texas history. A tour of the capital is great too. I also noticed the Mardel stores in the area carry quite a bit of material for this as well.
