I know this has been discussed here before, but cannot seem to locate the threads.
I was wondering what people are using for Art History. I own The Annotated Mona Lisa already. Do you use that book? What do you use in addition to it or in place of it?
Thanks.

I use The Annotated Mona Lisa as well as The Story of Painting by Sister Wendy Beckett. I have the videos that go with The Story of Painting as well. We cycle through these as we do history, and my older children grasp things that they didn't quite get the when they previously read the books or watched the videos. I feel like it gives them a pretty good grasp of art history by the time they have graduated.

Sister Wendy has other art books and videos as well as the Painting ones mentioned above. My daughter used them all and Annotated Mona Lisa. She took the AP Art History exam and used a test prep book that had a CD full of visuals that went with it - I am trying to remember the name. I think something like A+ (not one of the well-known ones). It was pretty good - and she scored a 5 after just pulling together the course from all over.
Oh - she also watched the series on the Louvre by Teaching Company (and we got to visit the Louvre!!)

We like The Story of Art by Gombrich and Teaching Company DVD's - specifically A History of European Art. They also have American Art by the same teacher.

My boys are all liking The Story of Art by Gombrich. I guess I should mention that there are some pictures of naked statutes and paintings in it (along with many others). It never occurred to me that people would care about this, but on another board I read, some folks really were. By mentioning it people can decided for themselves if it's potentially right for them or not.

We used the Sister Wendy book and dvds for grammar stage and logic stage.
Now using Jansen's Short History of Art and Simon Schama's Power of Art (http://www.amazon.com/Simon-Schamas-Power-Art-Schama/dp/B000NTPG84/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1254831416&sr=8-1)for 8th.
Power of Art should be previewed and it NOT for younger kids.
It is, however, a fabulous program highlighting 3 artists per dvd in the series with great detail. We had seen Simon host History of Britain and loved him so were thrilled to find this set.

We used both Sister Wendy and Mona Lisa, plus Barrons AP Art History testing text. Barrons for vocab, outlines of characteristics and dates, tests.
