Could you link to this thread? I'm interesting in learning more. THanks.

Gotta love a free meal! :D Honestly, we didn't really use it as an incentive b/c my dc read anyway. BUT, it sure was nice to have those coupons to use when we wanted a cheap dinner out. Of course, Pizza Hut's drinks cost an arm and a leg so...for us it was best to order the pizzas and take them home.

We participate every year. And every year i either lose the darn things or just never getting around to utilizing all of them.

First, check w/ your local Pizza Hut to see if they will let you use the coupon for a kids lunch buffet. Some will, some won't. It makes it cheaper if you have to take other family members along. More food for the cost.

Next --the PH is s'posed to award a button/pin on receiving the first coupon, and then add a sticker each time they come in redeeming a coupon. Check to see if your PH does that too.

and do NOT date the coupons when you receive them! If you have to delay the award at all [like when i couldn't find the darn things for a month] you can put a later "awarded on' date than usual. They are only good for a month after the awarded date. They are also only good till...the end of march? so double check when they expire.

i think it's a great program tho!! combine it w/ bookadventure.com for a decent reading program incentive:-)

My children have always enjoyed collecting their stickers and earning their reward at the end of the year. We do the reading, anyway, why not get something for it?

Love the program! We've done it for the past several years, and it's always been positive. The kids love picking out their own personal pan pizza, and generally the employees say something nice to them about being readers or earning their tickets or something along those lines.

Thanks for reminding me to sign up for next year!

I signed us up last month. This will be our first year, but looking forward to it.

We haven't done that particular program (b/c the pizzas aren't kosher), but we used to occasionally participate in programs at local libraries or bookstores.

It was not a good experience. I would not have done it at all if our children weren't already voracious readers - I think bribing children to read reinforces all the wrong things - but as they were, I thought it would be completely harmless.

Each time at least some of the kids have gotten focused on the list rather than the reading - and I've watched all my independent readers move toward shorter, faster books because they could get entered on the list sooner. I think these programs are counterproductive and are not only not a way to create readers, they encourage readers to view their reading in a very superficial way.

I do like the idea of the book club for kids that inspired Deconstructing Penguins; I think that is a wonderful way to support reading and to give kids the tools to get more out of their reading and to get parents more comfortable having book-related discussions with their kids. I wish *that* were what the libraries were doing each summer...

We participate, but I don't treat it as an incentive. My kids read anyway, so we just give them credit for what they're already doing and they get free pizza. We get them to go because I don't want to pay for drinks, and also because I don't really care for Pizza Hut very much.

...and Eliana, the beauty of the Book It program is that YOU decide what the "requirement" is.

There is no list, or quota, or requirements other than that the child be reading on YOUR terms.
The only way it would be counter-productive is if you set the terms to be quantity over quality.

My guys don't have a "list". We just go once a month :-)
Unless i lose the tickets, lol.

Thank you all...I think we will enjoy doing this. I really like that "I" can set the requirement for how much they have to read each week. :001_smile:

Sue,
I just wanted to share that when we go to Pizza Hut, we ask for a 2 liter of pop. They bring it out and how many ever cups we need. It costs us $1.99 for all of us to have pop.

We have participated in the past, and my boys loved it.
