This year, we're reading a lot of WTM recs that go along with our history studies or the time period we're in. I use similar works for our literature time.

Handwriting is Getty Dubay Italic.

Writing - I've used a variety of things this year, including copywork and things from Intermediate Language Lessons; some writing assignments from Abeka grammar; Writer's Express; and Draw Write Now.

Spelling Workout (last part of E) and F. Wordly Wise to finish up year.

Abeka, God's Gift of Language, A.

I don't know if you count Latin as LA or foreign language, but we did a review/wrap-up of Minimus this year and are working in Minimus Secundus. We also do Spanish.

My next yr's 4th grader will be doing:

Apples and Pears spelling
homemade vocabulary (pre-selected words from reading by me that she adds to a dictionary she is creating)
grammar--no text. We take paragraphs from reading and go over all grammar/mechanics from them.
writing--one major assignment per week. She is advanced, so they will typically be 2-3 paragraphs long.
1 hr of reading per day

We just finished 4th grade using BJU Grammar & Writing, Spelling, and Handwriting. Reading / Literature was a mix of TOG Year 4 and Sonlight Core 5. We supplemented the BJU writing chapters with chapters from Write Source books (used in TOG Classic).

last year for 4th grade I used....

R&S Grammar - We liked this a lot, did not use every exercise though. Mostly did odds or evens.
Classical Writing Aesop B - We are drop outs. I just started doing my own thing which we continued this year.
Spelling Workout - it's doing the job
English from the Roots up - This has been a lot of fun!

O.K.

Growing with Grammar 4 - 3 days per week
Writing Tales 1 - 3 days per week
(I've done some manipulating to make these two programs compliment eachother topically)
Spelling Power - 4 days per week
Copywork/Dictation - 2 or 3 days per week

I read literature aloud over lunch and we discuss, often we use a VP Literature Guid.

He is required to do 40 minutes of independent reading daily (I require 10 minutes per grade level). If he likes his book, he'll go way over, if not it can be a stretch;).

In addition, he writes a narration from history or science a couple of times per week.

Spelling - SWR
Grammar - finish FLL 3, FLL4 (if either of these fail us, my next thing to consider is GWG)
Literature - Selections from Ambleside Online, tweaked for our reading level and to correspond with our history time period.
Writing - this is where I'm still searching for a philosophy that I'm comfortable with. I'm thinking I will rely heavily on dictation. I'm looking forward to reading SWB's new book and *maybe* considering whether the level 2 workbook would be too far beneath where we are.

I would like to add in some poetry memorization, but haven't planned that out yet.

As far as foreign language goes, I will probably hold off one more year and start Latin in 5th.

Our LA for 4th next year:

R&S English 4
SWO F and part of G
Finish CW Aesop and start CW Poetry for Beginners
Daily dictation practice
Assigned reading time (30-45 minutes) and set free reading time (not decided how long)

I'll have a fourth grader next year. I think we've sort of already started fourth grade really. I go more by their age than the time of the year. He will be nine in April.

Anyways:

Rod & Staff English
Rod & Staff Spelling
Handwriting Without Tears
Sonlight Grade 3 - 5 Readers - he reads anywhere from one to three chapters a day and then does copywork from those chapters.
Prima Latina

That's what he's been doing. I just purchased Understanding Writing and plan to start that in the next month or so. If I like it (and I'm convinced I'm going to), we will probably start doing the R&S English orally. Right now, he's doing all the writing exercises in R&S. I'm also considering English from the Roots Up or Vocabulary Vine for root studies.

I use Sonlight LA (that matches the core -- Core 4 this year.) That covers a lot of writing and general LA skills, not real heavy on formal grammar (which we get when we do Rod & Staff English on other years.)

We also use ZB Handwriting -- our last year is grade 4 or earlier, depending on when they master it.

We also use SWO.

The kids also do tons of reading (Sonlight lists and other) and being read to.

Latin, Classical Writing, and whatever literature I come up with. Occasional copywork. He's a natural speller, so we're not really doing a spelling program.

I need to take a sort of poll of the board to get an idea of perspective and choices if you dont mind....thanks!!!:D

Spelling/Dictation: continue with SWR, although I'm undecided at this point if we'll really keep going with it. We might pull spelling words from his writing assignments.
Reading: history, science, good children's literature (we'll do TOG and pick from various sources for lit. suggestions).
Writing: Ds will continue with Imitations in Writing (Aesop), alternating with Imi. in Wr. Fairy Tales. I also pre-ordered SWB's new writing book and have WA from TOG on hand. We might do a hodge-podge of all 3 to keep it a bit more varied, but I'm undecided since I haven't seen SWB's book yet.
Grammar: possibly FLL 4, it'll come out this summer

I realize this is all still very vague :)
Hope it helps, anyway.

R & S for grammar/writing
Spelling Workout for spelling
HWOT cursive for handwriting
LLATL orange for literature - we are only using the four book studies
Daily Skill Builders for vocabulary

R&S 4 Grammar (and the writing portion)
SWO E spelling
HWT -- cursive handwriting practice
Reading : along with out history and other "good" books of interest

We do this exact program, except at a 3rd grade level and will do the same for 4th grade next year. I am considering adding Writing Strands 3 because we aren't doing the writing portion of R & S and because it looks like it's self motivated. I am a poor writer and don't think I am a good teacher of writing. I am learning with my kids, but this curriculum challenges the student to be independent.

4th Grade Language Arts huh?

This time around we are doing the following:

Grammar:
KISS grammar with Kellog and Reed's 100 Lessons in English Grammar ( found in Old Fashioned Education)

Mad Libs

Spelling

I have him do copywork and dictation from either history, science, or literature.

Vocabulary:

Vocabulary Vines

Outlining:

He does outlining from Story of the World

Latin:

Latina Christiana I= he does some grammar lessons which they compare to English

Logic:

Logic is a part of Language Arts: I use Building Thinking Skills Level 2. If you notice, there is a figural and verbal section. In the verbal section, there is a lot of writing.

Recitation

He memorizes poems and Bible versions. He had to recite them. He also reads some times sections of Story of the World, Plutarch, or Shakespeare. I check his pronunciation.

Narrations:

He narrates Story of the World, literature, Shakespeare, Plutarch, science

I think that I covered everything in Language Arts.

Blessings,
Karen
