Does SWB still recommend Vocab From Classical Roots? I heard it was not the best for SAT prep. Please correct me if I have been misinformed.

Also, how about Vocab for the High School Student?

OR

Do we just study roots and hope they recognize words on the big tests?

OR

Do we just read, read, read???

Thanks!

My dc are working through the VFCR series (A-E). Both of them are testing well in vocab. at their respective levels. My dd will finish with the series early next year and then we're on to Vocabulary for the High School Student followed by Vocab. for the College Bound Student. Since I haven't actually used either of these yet, I can't really comment on them, but just having browsed through them they look good.

Nice thing about VFCR is that they are learning the Greek and Latin roots of many words. They've been able to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words just by knowing the root.

Just my $.02

My ds LOVES these! He took the SAT in January and was only 1/4 of the way through the book, but recognized at least 3 words on the test because of the cartoons.

So does the student just look at the cartoons and it "sticks" because of the picture? Is it a workbook w/ activities?

Thanks!

EXCEPT read great literature (sometimes we pulled vocabulary from the books we were reading, if the study guide included them) AND ds read through Vocabulary Cartoons I and II. He made a near-perfect score on the reading portion of the SAT, so we were happy with the results of our method.:)

This is what I am doing but just so ya know :001_smile: I am hsing two visual spatial thinkers. I use vocab cartoons and use Schoolhouse Tech's vocab worksheet program http://www.schoolhousetech.com/Vocabulary/Default.aspx to make crossword puzzles and other worksheets. I use vocab cartoons as a jumping off place. The boys have to write out each dif, use each word in at least one sentence of their creation, and draw their own cartoon to define the word.

I also use Word Roots software http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=473703&netp_id=300477&event=ESRCN&item_code=WW&view=details by Critical Thinking Books. I use vocab worksheet program to create crossword puzzles, ect......

I also pull words from the lit they are reading or from subjects they are studying and have them work the words as describe above.
