My dd and I are plugging away through Henle 1. No tests or quizzes and just a little review. We plan to take it over 3 years along with Spanish 1. We move side by side working out the text, grammar, and answers. Does anyone else do this? I know a teacher would be much better, but this is the best I can do right now. She seems to be understanding it, at least much better than I. Is she learning enough? I sure hope so, because we are working so hard. Thanks for the encouragement. Angela Thomas

I used Henle to teach myself, and then was teaching it to my oldest son before we decided that Galore Park Latin Prep was more fun. And honestly, that's why we switched - ds was doing fine in Henle. We were just both a little bored, mainly my fault as I was on my 2nd time through and, well, I get bored.
So yes, you can do it. The Henle yahoogroup is invaluable for when you have questions.

My oldest son taught himself using Henle books 1 & 2. He did all the exercises but no tests (none were available that I was aware of). He tested into intermediate Latin at college and ended up with a Latin minor.

(minus the youngest---she's doing LCII now). Henle I is manageable by yourself. I would have continued with Latin, but the older two were on the verge of a minor rebellion! So, we finished the book in December. I would love to continue myself someday!

Yes! This is an excellent text for self-study, and for homeschoolers teaching their children.
I would highly recommend working a few lessons ahead of your dc. It will make teaching it much easier. When I first began using Henle w/my older dd., I would work alongside her. I was still trying to process the info. myself, so I was not all that much help to her. I decided to jump ahead of her, and it really made a difference for us.
There is a Henle yahoo group that is very helpful. Also, if you have trouble, you can come here and ask, too. :001_smile:
What lesson are you on so far? How old is your dd? There are two study guides available for Henle. The one from Memoria Press takes a very slow track. I would recommend this to those who are using it with younger students. The one by Laura Berquist moves faster, and has two tracks you could choose from. There are also tests available through MODG.

We are using the Memoria Press guide which does Henle slowly which we like.

One of my local homeschooling friends is using Henle. She had no previous Latin background and her oldest seems to be doing very well with it. I think she's using the Memoria Press guide.

Yes, we are going about Henle just as you describe. I am using the Memoria Press 2nd syllabus this year and their quiz/test booklet, though. As far as the lessons, we just sit down together and figure out the new material as we go. We make up flashcards (per the Memoria Press guide) and review them together daily. We also chant the grammar forms together daily.
We started Henle 1 in 5th grade, and I hope to finish it sometime in 8th grade, so we will have taken 3 - 4 years to go through it. I feel like taking the book at such a slow pace is really helping us to practice thoroughly and really internalize the material.
Per the suggestion of several on this board, I'm going to try to incorporate a little reading of Lingua Latina this summer and next year to help us work on strengthening the reading part of Latin.
Sounds like you're doing well to me!
