I have a friend who has offered me the Scottish Rite dyslexia program dvd's for use for FREE. While I'm overwhelmed that this program would just drop into my lap, I am not sure if it is a good fit for us.

My ds is reading about 4th grade level. This program starts at the very beginning with short vowel sounds. While I don't want to assume anything ("He already knows this stuff!"), I also don't want to bore us both to tears. His specific diagnosed LD is dyslexia in spelling with borderline reading/writing fluency scores. He is doing well with All About Spelling, and can read the BJU 4th grade reader albeit v-e-r-y slowly. He has an extreme aversion to any sort of chapter book.

Just so conflicted about what to do! If you've used the Scottish Rite, what sort of LD's would you say this is for? The homeschooler I'm getting it from is teaching a 3rd grader with extreme reading delays and she raves about the program. However, this is not really our specific problem. Hmmm .... advice? I can get the first few workbooks for about $70, so it may be quite a small investment just to see ??

My son is using Scottish Rite with a tutor we hired. She is not using the videos but I have seen them. The best part we have seen with SR is that you can move quickly thru it if the child understands. I know starting at the beginning sounds boring, but for my son it gave him a chance to learn how it is presented while doing easy activities. By the time he reached difficult skills, he was familiar with the format and took comfort in being able to predict activities. My son has been using Scottish Rite since July and we have seen a big jump in reading and spelling skills.

Scottish Rite designed their programs specifically for children and adults with dyslexia. It is recognized as one of the best for those with dyslexia. It is not often discussed here because it is not as accessible to homeschoolers.
