If I had never heard of lapbooking before and you wanted to share with me what it entails and how to do it what would you tell me about it and what resources would you share?
TIA!:)

Try this free Deer Lapbook (http://www.handsofachild.com/shop/Deer-Ebook-P669.aspx) from Hands of a Child. Our children really enjoyed it as an enrichment activity for our 'Life of Mammals' studies.

Jennifer has an instruction book available for order on her website. I was blessed to attend a seminar that she gave on this subject earlier this year, and it's been great for DD, 11.
What I like about her approach is that it is very creative, and it grows out of a unit study or notebooking approach to social studies or science. So, similarly with Writers' Jungle, you study a subject thoroughly from many angles, and incorporate whatever skill info you want to from it, and then write a main 'piece' about everything you have learned, and then present/illustrate it with a lapbook.
So many lapbook approaches seem to use them to teach, and that does not suit my DD's learning style. She would get distracted the by flaps and decor, and resent the need for content because the 'art' of it would be so much fun. So using this as the culmination of a study rather than as a tool for the study is great for us.
Steward Ship also has a lot of individual notebooking outlines and suggestions for various topics. These are great for families with lots of children, because each can study the subject at his own level. There is also a master book about notebooking/unit studies in general. That one is great if you have taken one of her classes; but as a standalone item I don't think that I would really have used it. In this kind of thing there is no substitute for seeing some finished notebooks and lapbooks, and for seeing her with her girls, the woman herself, confident and humble, and very capable and transparent.

Hi Katherine... Lap books are just another way to present your written information. A lot like note booking pages, or dividing information up in sections. Each fold in your book would be information about your topic you are studying... it could be history, science, math, a book you read...
If you prefer to learn what you can so you can create as you go.... The links already provided by others are great links.... The squidoo link is probably my favorite...... Homeschool helper (http://www.homeschoolhelperonline.com/lapbooks.htm)is another great resource..and free...
For books... I recommend Jennifer Stewards too! Love her! Steward Ship (http://www.unitstudies.com/books/index.aspx)
Tobins lab (http://www.tobinslab.com/shopping/catalog.aspx?scCatalogCategoryID=63&CategoryTrail=0)book is a great resource to have as well or instead of... you probably dont need both... they are both how too type books......
Dinah Zike books are great to really learn about folds and or different ways to display (for your children to display.)

I don't have anything to add to the how to but I just wanted to suggest Hands of a Child. We have done several of their lapbooks for science and the boys love them. They have a lapbook for just about every topic and include upper levels as well.
