My mother needs to drive up for a funeral, and she doesn't have a passport. Does she need one if she's driving (as opposed to flying)?

Thanks!!

is that you have to have a passport now to cross the borders by car now as well..........this just went into effect recently.

I think you only need a passport to fly into Canada until next year, but I am not 100% sure on that. When we moved to AR last May we only needed birth certificicates and they didn't even look at them.

I live in Canada, and have crossed into to NY state a couple of times since January -- photo ID is still fine.

but if you want to get back into the US, you'll need one. New rule, new lines, new headaches for border communities.

I know you definitely need one for Mexico as of Jan 1. I'd make sure if I were you.

Currently a driver's license along with proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate is sufficient for land & sea travel between the USA and Canada. The US State Department website is now saying that full implementation will not go into effect earlier than June 2009. I think they must have been way too overloaded with requests for new passports and couldn't handle the demand.

Here is a link to the webpage I'm reading from: Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html) from the US Department of State

on the Canadian border will expect a passport...

Even before it was "official" I was let into Canada with no question, but went through quite the intimidation conversation when I came back into the US...:ack2:

Just wanted to chime in and agree with Tokyomarie. I live nearly within site of the U.S.-Canada border, so border crossing issues are a hot topic here. Each member of our family has a passport; it's a convenient form of identification and we always have them "on board" when we go back and forth. But technically, they aren't mandatory for re-entry as the passport requirement has not yet been implemented.
