View Full Version : Another DIVE question - this time Chemistry

Which textbook is "best" to use with the DIVE Chemistry? Do you use BOTH Apologia books with it, or just one? I was wondering about this since I kind of assumed that the BJU text might cover "more" material than the 1st Apologia book. But wondered if both Apologia books covered more than the BJU text?? What about tests? Do they provide those or do you use the ones from the publisher?
BTW, I also have the microchem kit and the TC DVDs, but I am worried about trying to piece these things together.
Sorry, I'm rambling.

From the DIVE with Apologia Chemistry syllabus:
DIVE Science Lessons do not correlate completely with the Apologia text. Occasionally, they contain more or less information than is in the Apologia chapter they correlate with. Please use the DIVE Chemistry Course as the main course, and supplement it with Apologia’s texts, or the Internet for Lessons 1 and 2. Remember that the DIVE CD is designed to prepare you for college classes, where you will have to know the textbook information plus the lecture information that may or may not be in the textbook. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE BOTH APOLOGIA TEXTBOOKS TO COMPLETE THIS COURSE. If you are planning to take the CLEP or AP Chemistry exam, then purchase both texts. Otherwise, just purchase Exploring Creation With Chemistry, and when a DIVE Lesson does not have a corresponding Apologia module, just use the DIVE Lecture and Internet to find any definitions you need.
We use the BJUP text, but I'm not sure how it compares to the two Apologia texts. My son will not be taking the AP test or CLEPing out of chemistry so I haven't looked the differences.
I have the TC videos, but I haven't had a chance to see if they are necessary. I've heard they are useful for the math. I plan on ordering the microchem kit as well, but haven't yet. Maybe between the two of us (or some other kind soul that comes along) we can figure this out. :001_smile:

How is that going? I noticed on the syllabus at the DIVE site that approx. 19 chapters in the BJU text are covered. How many chapters are in the BJU text? I tried to find a spot where I could "look inside" to see, but failed.
I did see that there is also a DIVE kit (kind of pricey) that can be ordered through home training tools.
ETA: It appears from the syllabus that the DIVE lectures correspond better with the BJU text.

Yes, it does look that way. On the downside BJUP released a third edition text, which we use, but the online syllabus is for the 2nd edition. So far it's only resulted in minor changes. There are 20 chapters in the third edition text, I'm guessing there are 19 chapters in the 2nd edition text and that DIVE uses almost all of the BJ text. I say that because chapter 20 is nuclear chemistry and that is on the syllabus. I've been meaning to email DIVE to see if they are working on a new syllabus.
ETA: email sent. procrastination over. :tongue_smilie:

this is good to know. Keep me posted if they update the syllabus!

I am using the Dive CD's this year with Spectrum Chemistry and the Teaching Co. CD's to reinforce the math. The TC lectures (2nd ed.) line up pretty much sequentially with the Dive CD's with many weeks having no TC lectures (since they are not math focused) and some weeks having 3 or 4. The only lectures that I haven't figured out where to fit in are #28 and #34-#36.
Let me know if you want me to post my TC/Dive references. It is chicken scratch so I will have to just type it up.

I've typed a word table showing the correlating the Dive Chemistry Weeks/Lectures to both Spectrum Chemistry and the Teaching Co. Lectures (the new 2nd edition which includes additional lectures so the #'s won't line up with the 1st edition). As you will see, the Specturm chapters go all over the place, but for now we've decided to follow the Dive order as it looks to be the less confusing alternative.
I don't think I can attach the file here so I will e-mail it to anyone who wants it. If one of you knows how to attach it here, please feel free to do so.
One caveat: We are only on week 4 so this will probably be far from perfect, but it's my best guess.

I would love to have this, too, Nancy, even though we won't be in Chemistry until next year. We'll be using Spectrum and the TC dvds, and we may add DIVE into the mix.
Thanks so much for being willing to share!!

I can't seem to figure out how to attach a file using the e-mail feature of the forum :001_huh:.
I will be happy to send this to anyone who wants it, but please send me an e-mail (not a private message) through the forum so that I have your e-mail address and can reply with the file attachment directly from my hotmail account.
Thanks!
Nancy
