I used it with our TOG yr. 2 and 3 and really enjoyed it. It was one of the spines for my middle schooler. It was easy to read and she didn't put up much of a fight reading it!

I really like it...it reads nice, is a great family history read aloud for all ages, IMO.

I didn't like it at all--in fact, it's one reason why we dropped Ambleside year 2. I didn't like the glowing presentation of Christopher Columbus; I'm not a fan of Columbus and don't think that he should be presented as a hero of any kind.

Also, it was too religious for us. Of course, we're atheists. A Christian family may well love the book for the very reasons that we didn't care for it.

I think it is a good choice for upper elementary/jr. high students.

Pros: Well-written narrative including all the major and many minor figures/events of American History.

Cons: Covers very little of the 20th Century.
Because of the narrative format covering lots of human interest details (this is what makes it so readable), "minor" events tend to have the same "weight" as "major" events. (This is true with many narrative histories, not just TCOO).

We use SOTW with This Country of Ours and Our Island Story. The Christian references don't bother me - they are (IMO) just a symptom of the age of the book, rather than an attempt to convert.

Best wishes

Laura
