View Full Version : Overthink blogging with me, won't you?

After hanging back and observing a few blogs for a few months, and with a good friend's encouragement, I started my own humble blog a few months ago. I use the name "Valerie in Chicago" here. But I use "Urban Mom" when blogging. I think that I figured that I wanted a bit more anonymity when blogging than here. (whatever that means; in hindsight, they're both still pretty anonymous, really) Then for my link, I went with countrydayacademy.blogspot. Urbanmom was taken. And we jokingly call ourselves "B..... Country Day Academy" as a light-hearted jab at the exclusive private schools where I grew up.

So now I have three different things going in cyberspace. "Valerie in Chicago," "Urban Mom" and "countrydayacademy." Is that weird?

Do most people try to line things up better? Is your name here the same as your blogname? And is your blogname the same as your blog link?

Or am I REALLY just overthinking things? I tend to do that....... alot......

I'm pretty much Daisy everywhere BUT that isn't my real name. I also don't use real names for my kids and hubby on my blog.

It would depend. Are you trying to "brand" your name so that you can become a homeschool blogging superstar? Or are you just doing it for fun? If the first, then you should probably make them line up. If the second, then you are fine, I'm sure.

My name here is the same as on my blog. I changed my name here a few years ago so they'd match up. Why? Because I am a recovering perfectionist. :D My blog name is the name of our homeschool. I also don't use my real name, my dh's real name or my kids' real names (no, we really didn't name them 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in Italian :001_smile: ... although some people think we did).

Do what you like and what family and friends can remember (if that is who you are targeting your blog towards). The rest of us will figure it out. :001_smile: (eventually)

My real name is Amy and that's what I use on my blog as well. I could never keep track if I gave myself a new name. LOL I can barely keep track of myself right now.

I mention JudoMom nowhere on my blog. I don't really want the 2 lined up, because I don't want to leave an easy trail for my family that reads my blog to find me here. I'm sure they can if they take a minute, but I don't think any will try to track me down. And it's not like I post anything crazy here, but I like to believe my family doesn't read it. And my blog name is different than my blog link. I'd kind of like them to be the same, but made the blog address before I came up with a name.

The only thing I might mention is there is an Urban Mom that just registered here and it confused me because of your blog (which I enjoy, BTW :)).

My real name is Arwen and I use ArwenA almost everywhere. My blog name is Morning Glory Academy and my blog URL is morninggloryclassical.blogspot.com. I had a blog with the URL of morninggloryacademy.blogspot.com for about a minute but thought I was so crazy that I deleted it. When I decided to try again I couldn't use the URL morningglorycademy.blogspot.com

I used to try to keep everything separate you know? On one forum I was mommamia, on this one, Maria/ME and on my blog just Maria...but I don't care any more. I think I was trying to protect my different feelings toward each community/forum....protect the different aspects of who I was. But then, as I got more comfortable with who I was I just started showing that more. Does that even make sense?

The bottom line is: "I yam who I yam." BUT I only show a part of my life online. I'm aspects of my whole, but not the whole. To reveal all would take a huge amount of time and work and for the online world I don't need to reveal all, KWIM? I also try hard to leave controversy (religion/politics mostly) for RL. That is heavy enough in RL I don't need to defend/remonstrate/testify/debate/appeal in the online world, also. I did that at first, and too much of my mental/emotional energy was wasted on things that were only online. It was disrupting my RL. No more. I leave it. Which is hard for me. I am a debater by nature. I love visiting all sides of a coin and taking a stance.

TMI? Sorry....but as you know I love your blog and who you are there! I think of you as Urban Mom even though it's countrydayacademy....and I have your little giftee in my car...it's made it that far....perhaps in the next month it will get to the post office!! ;):D

I use my real name and where I'm living...it helps me remember. The military will do that to ya!:D Blog is Living Life in Europe...because...well...I'm living life in Europe.

Valerie...I couldn't find you on here as Urban Mom, so thank you for clearing things up for me! I love you posting to my blog!:D

Amy loves Bud

Oh good! I was wondering who you were, LOL! I really like Urban Mom. Maybe because I'm a little jealous.

Anyway, I like your blog very much. I don't think it matters too much about the various names. I used to be lpmom a long time ago and still use that in my email, and my blog address was "100times". My blog was always called Good Soil, but I had to let the 100times go for a long drawn out reason. One day I was feeling particulary 7th gradish and used Amy loves Bud to set me apart from the many Amy's here, and it just clicked. But through the various blogs (I've had earthlink, then upsaid till they shut us all down, then a couple of blogger blogs) I've still kept track of most of my online friends. All that to say I think you're good!

Oh yeah, that's me, the next homeschool blogging superstar. NOT.

I changed my name when the format here changed. Before I just couldn't think of anything more clever than Jenni in KS. There are so many Jennifers and Jens and even Jennis that adding "in KS" to the end just doesn't seem to help that much. Plus, I remember people with more unusual posting names better. Valerie counts though since it isn't quite as common. I would have thought that Mungo would be a little more uncommon though, so what do I know?

I did choose to register here as PrairieAir thinking it would make it easier for people to connect me to my blog. However, that makes it more likely that someone from my blog (like my mom or MIL) could find me here easier, and I'd rather that not happen.

Oh, and thanks for clearing up that matter about your Meez T-shirt. ;)

Heidi @ Mt Hope

Way back when I began posting, I used poetsgardengirl because my world revolved around my home, garden and gift shop named Poet's Garden. As my life became more kid-oriented :) I used Heidi in OR here because it was more important (to me) that people knew my name and where I was from.

Because I'm a compulsive namer, I named my homeschool Mt. Hope Academy. When we moved to our forever home a little over a year ago, I named it Mt. Hope also. Partly because I like things to line up (like you were talking about) and also because homeschooling, home, and life are intertwined for us. My blog was originally named Mt. Hope Academy (and still has that address) but because I post about our intertwined life, not just school, I changed the name to Mt. Hope Chronicles. I do also use my first name on my blog, and when the format changed here, I changed my name to Heidi @ Mt. Hope.

Sorry I started rambling there. :) I should have just said, yes, I like everything in my life to line up and have purpose and meaning.

Thanks so much for your insights, everyone. Also, thanks for the comments about the blog, too. I so appreciate it!

I think I found the solution. I finally learned how to hyper-text, so I changed my signature to show the name of the blog instead of the long, drawn-out url. Maybe that will help clarify who I am. Because I know how everyone was up nights wondering about it all!

:001_rolleyes:

Anyway, thanks for helping me figure myself out here. Every issue where I have to"figure myself out" should be solved so easily, right?

A-HA! NOW I know who you are! :) I enjoy your blogging, and you leave the sweetest comments. But I didn't put your blog name with who you are *here*.

I now feel like my world makes a bit more sense. :)

Lorna in the boonies

Oh, I'm all over the place when it comes to my names. The places I've been the longest, I'm doonecookie. Apparently every Lorna in the world (not that there are that many of us out there) registers as doonecookie, though, and it got to be that the name was usually already taken when I would go to sign up somewhere new.

About that time was when my daughter died, and in my grief I thought that talithasmomtoo would work well and started using that as my user name (because everyone knows I'm Betty's mom and Bud's mom and Kitten's mom, but not everyone knows I'm Talitha's mom, too -- get it?).

After I came out of my grief, I switched to 'Lorna in the boonies', which is how I registered at the old boards, and I just brought it over here.

I wanted my blog to be even vaguer than any of those, so it is The Dewey Hafta Academy for Unfairly Mistreated Children.

Absolutely no continuity at all over here!
