Are sprouted onions edible?

I left it in the pantry and now it's sprouted. I'd like to use it in a gumbo I'm making, I'm just not sure if it's edible. I remember reading once that when a potato has sprouted, it has produced toxins and shouldn't be eaten. Would you eat it?

I think as long as the onion is not mushy you're ok. That's funny, I've eaten plenty of sprouted potatoes and never had a problem:ack2:!
