I have a few of the books, history and literature. I used the ancient Civilizations last year. My son loved it.
I was wondering if anyone else uses these and what do they use to supplement them?

(I am still pretty new at homeschooling, that is why I ask SO many questions. We are going into our second year.)

For my crew they do not have enough meat to stand alone. We got library books on the topics covered in History Pockets and read/discussed those. We did this technique during a summer fun time. During the school year I used our history text/program and then used the History Pocket that would go along with it.

We've used the Ancient Civilizations pockets this year as a supplement our SOTW 1 work. I wouldn't just use them alone, but my son really likes to do them so we add them in where appropriate.

We started Ancient Greece this year with History Odyssey level 2 Ancients. We liked some of the pockets but not most of them. I thought the boys would like these because the really enjoy the lapbooks from Hands of a Child. What I have found with the history pockets is that they don't allow for much creativity. It seems like most of the work is already done so the resulting book is not really their own like the lapbooks. You didn't mention how old your son is. Maybe they work better for younger children. I think the Ancient Greece one contained good information but the boys were board with it. I don't think I will use them again for this age anyway.

When I used them, they were the supplement to SOTW/Veritas. :)

We're using the Ancients one as a supplement to SOTW1. As we get to the relevant parts of SOTW, we put together the pocket over about 2 weeks. So far K really likes them, and some of the activities (like the vocabulary pages) we don't really do in another way, so it's a great addition.

Dd 7 loved them... dd12 did not. Lots of cutting and pasting.

I bought the Ancient Civilization one to use with SOTW but never even took it out of its shipping box. We are just doing the coloring pages in the activity guide and that seems to take DS forever. I think if I pulled out the History pockets we would never make it through the book. We are still not at the half way mark.:crying: Oh well! Good thing we are schooling year round.

We use them with SOTW and my dd 9 loves them. She likes to color though. We have some of those treasure chests too. Anything hands on and fun, crafty she likes. We use a timeline and figures for history too so HP are just part of the History fun here at our house.:001_rolleyes:

My son likes the literature pockets. They have cute ones for K-2

I used them to suppliment our American History studies. We don't make the pockets. We just do the activities and add them to our notebooks. My children love them.
