We are debating whether it will be hubby and I or the kids too (5 and almost 3). We like some outside activity (hiking, biking, horseback riding), but aren't sure if we want to base a whole vacation around that. Is D.C. hot and crowded in June?

It can be hot but usually not too bad...it's gets sticky and humid more in July/August.

Crowded...yes.

You could stay for a while in the Shenendoah's, where you can find plenty of the outdoorsy stuff--the mountains are lovely in late spring.
Then, come over to DC, just two hours or so away. Go to some museums, ride the outdoor carousel, see the dinosaurs at the Natural History museum, see Mt. Vernon. (Then come see me! lol)
You can have both!

Oh, and the kids here are still in public schools until the 3rd week of June, if that helps any.

We took the kids last July for the Independence Day celebrations. It was hot, but certainly not unbearable. I knew my 9 yo would love it, but even my 6 and 5 yo were enthralled! They loved being on the mall, seeing the statues and monuments that they had only seen in books, and couldn't get enough of the treasure hunt type activities. Even my very boy-boy 5 year old has begged to go back, and certainly we will try to oblige. Even with an entire week there, we missed so many things that it warrants at least one more trip!

edited to add: there were ample things to do outdoors! The National Zoo itself was a huge hike, LOL. And, you can rent little boats, bikes, etc right off the mall to mix things up.

We went in June four years ago, June 12-17, I think. I'd shoot myself first before going at that time again. It was way too hot. And there were a lot of school group type tours.
