There's a song on Beethoven's Wig (http://www.amazon.com/Beethovens-Wig-Sing-Along-Symphonies/dp/B000060OLA/r), and here's a poem:
Willy, Willy, Harry, Ste
Harry, Dick, John, Harry three,
One, Two, Three Neds, Richard two,
Henry Four, Five, Six - then who?
Edward Four, Five, Dick the Bad,
Harries twain and Ned the Lad,
Mary, Bessie, James the Vain,
Charlie, Charlie, James again.
William and Mary, Anna Gloria,
Four Georges, William, and Victoria.
Ned Seventh rules till 1910,
When George the Fifth came in, and then
Ned went when Mrs. Simpson beckoned,
Leaving George and Liz the Second.
HTH!

Here's one I have found:First William the Norman,
Then William his son:
Henry, Stephen, and Henry,
Then Richard and John;
Next Henry the Third,
Edwards one, two, and three.
And again after Richard
Three Henrys we see.
Two Edwards, third Richard,
If rightly I guess;
Two Henrys, sixth Edward,
Queen Mary, Queen Bess.
Then Jamie the Scotchman,
Then Charles whom they slew,
Yet received after Cromwell
Another Charles too.
Next James the second
Ascended the throne;
Then good William and Mary
Together came on.
Til, Anne, Georges four,
And fourth William all past,
God sent Queen Victoria:
May she long be the last!
I guess I have to come up with the last bit.

Here's a poem we could have used, but didn't:
William the Conqueror long did reign, William Rufus by an arrow was slain. Henry was a scholar bright, Stephen was a king without any right. Henry II Plantagenet's scion, Richard I was as brave as lion. John though a tyrant the Charter signed, Henry III had a weakly mind. Edward 1 conquered Cumbria's Dales, Edward II was crowned Prince of Wales. Edward III restored Scotia's pride, Richard II by Henry's hand died. Henry IV then wore the crown, Henry V pulled the French king down. Henry VI lost the Roses and France, Edward IV led the commons a dance, Edward V was slain by his brother, Richard III soon gave way to another. Henry VII was frugal of means, Henry VIII had too many queens. Edward VI Reformation began, Bloody Mary frustrated the plan. Wise and profound were Elizabeth's ways. England and Scotland were joined under James. Charles found the people a cruel corrector, Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector. Charles II hid in an oak, James II took Popery's yoke. William and Mary next shared the throne, Good Queen Anne then reigned alone. George I from Hanover came, George II carried on the name, George III was loved in the land, George IV was pompous and grand William IV had no heir of his own, so good Queen Victoria came to the throne. Edward VII loved gambling and fun, George V reigned through World War I. Edward VIII gave his throne for a wife, George VI saw more World War strife. Elizabeth II was crowned young and serene and the people still sing "God save our Queen"

Just to clarify my statement, memory work has not always been consistent in our homeschool. I would have liked to follow TWTM recommendations for each year, but it hasn't always worked out that way. I found the memory box system which has helped, but after Latin and Greek flashcards each day, it's hard to do more.

The one I know is very like Plaid Dad's until the last few lines...
Willy, Willy, Harry, Ste,
Harry, Dick, John, Harry three;
One, two, three Neds, Richard two,
Henry four, five, six - then who?
Edwards four, five, Dick the bad,
Harrys (twain) and Ned (the Lad);
Mary, Bessie, James the Vain,
Charlie, Charlie, James again.
Will and Mary, Anna Gloria,
Georges four, then Will, Victoria;
Edward seven, George and Ted,
George the sixth, now Liz instead.
twain = two

Yup! Favourites here too.
it was great for the first rotation, but for the next rotation (next year) I would like something like the poem that has a little more information in it than the song.

Here's another slightly different version:
Willie, Willie, Harry, Steve,
Harry, Dick, John, then Harry Three
One, two, three Neds, Richard Two
Henry Four, Five, Six, then who?
Edwards Four, Five, Dick the Bad,
Harrys twain and Ned the lad
Mary, Bessie, James the Vain,
Charlie, Charlie, James again
William and Mary, Anna in Gloria,
Four Georges, William and Victoria
Edward, George, then Ned the Eighth
Quickly goes and abdicat'th
Leaving George, then Liz the Second,
And with Charlie next it's reckoned.
That's the way our monarchs lie
Since Harold got it in the eye!

Love it! I'm switching :)

'Though this is for fun, and to learn the names in order, it is not factually accurate.
The most egregious error, which I assume is more grammatical than factual:
"Edward V was slain by his brother" - obviously no one is accusing Edward V's little brother of murdering himself and his big brother! I assume this means Edward 1V's brother Richard of Gloucester - though there are very valid objections to that too.
The one which bothers me most is:
'Richard II by Henry's hand died' If this is taken poetically, it could apply to Shakespeare's version of the story, but not to any known facts. He died at Pontefract castle, the cause is unknown.
Steven wasn't without any right at all - he and Matilda each had claims to the throne.
John was no more a tyrant than Richard I or Henry II had been, in many ways he much much *less* tyrannical than either of these.
I'm not Catholic, but 'took Popery's yoke' bothers me a lot.
I don't want to spoil anyone's fun, but I do wish there were a more accurate way of doing this concisely and memorably! (I also wish these lists wouldn't all start with William the Conqueror! ...but that's a different rant.):rant:
