I've posted on the general board about my 14 year old dd. She was in a private school but we just had to take her out today due to health reasons. We are hoping to have her start again next semester. In the meantime, I need to find resources for teaching some core classes so that she will get the semester credit and also so that she will be ready for 2nd semester.

My biggest concern is geometry. Her school uses University of Chicago geometry. I find it difficult to teach from this book. I am very weak in geometry so I need to find something that will teach both of us. I was hoping to find a good online class. Any suggestions?

She also needs to complete a semester of biology. I'm not too concerned about the text but I need to find online virtual labs to complete some of the labs. Any ideas?

Adaptive Curriculum - my daughter is using the Science part this year and loves it. They also have math.

How much does this cost?

Laura, will your school only accept credit from an accredited school? Or will they let your teach from a suitable text and show them the work? We did something similar with our dd and used Keystone National High School. We were not as happy with the geometry book as we were with the chemistry book. If I did not have to go through an accredited school, I would use Harold Jacobs Geometry. We supplement with it and are pleased. Best wishes and I hope your daughter is feeling better soon.

Laurel Springs Academy

or K12 International Academy , although you might have to take three courses for part time.

If it is for health reasons and for less than a semester, you'd probably be better off getting a homebound teacher from the school come in and do her work with her (mostly, they'll give her the assignments and pick them up but can help her with any issues). Maybe a friend could get video of the teacher teaching the geometry? The issue is that you're not likely to find a certain geometry program and yet she has to jump back in with her schoolmates in January.

Oh, I just re-read it...it's private school. Well, would they let her try to keep up with the classroom geometry? Again, if you could video it....

The Biology is less of an issue because as long as she gets the cell parts and chemistry part, everything else is very chapter dependent.

Check out The University of Oklahoma Online High School. They offer both courses (2 semesters of each). The cost is about $180 for each course.

I've been pleased with the courses so far. My boys are each taking a course through this high school. The teachers have been prompt and accessible - so far.

By virtual labs do you mean you want to watch them and then reproduce them or just watch them? The DIVE Biology DVDs has 28 labs all done on the DVD so you can watch them. The Lab sheets come with the DVDs as well. It's a full course which includes lectures, worksheets, tests etc but if you are specifically looking for lab work and want to be able to watch them all virtually then DIVE is only $50. We do the full DIVE Biology course so we actually reproduce the labs at home but the kit to do most of those labs runs a bit over $200 so that might be more than you want to do in your situation.

oh - I just realized I don't know if you need secular or not. DIVE is not but it is rigorous.

I'll second DIVE for the biology labs. For geometry, you might want to check with Jann in TX - she may be able to help you. Or maybe you could get a local tutor, maybe the math teacher from her school, who could teach from the text she's already using. I think it would be easier to go back in with having worked on the same math text.
