I looked into both PACE and Learning Rx but there aren't any centers near us. Can you recommend a Cognitive Skill Programs that I can use with my dss 6 with ADHD and SPD and 7.5 yo ADD at home?

Right now I'm looking for something comparable that I can have them do at home. Preferably something that won't brake the bank.

Thanks.

Audiblox (http://www.audiblox2000.com) might be a good choice for you. It was initially developed as a preschool program, so is appropriate for children as young as 4yo. Compared to PACE and LearningRX, it doesn't have as many exercises, it does not incorporate use of a metronome, and it does not have any exercises that address auditory processing (segmenting, blending, phoneme manipulation). That's why it's usually not my first choice. However, it is very suitable for younger children such as yours.

One thing you need to understand about cognitive skills training is that it takes dedication and persistence. Most children do not start showing gains outside the program until you have done 30 or 40 hours of training. (Some will show improvements sooner; others may take twice as long.) Average number of hours to optimize gains is probably in the neighborhood of 70 to 130 hours, but again some children can require more. It's a good idea to be clear about your commitment to the daily training before you purchase a kit. Especially with Audiblox, because there is less variety in the exercises, the training can becoming very boring for child and adult alike once the novelty wears off. However, it's okay to split training time up (you don't have to do an entire hour in one sitting) and, if you are willing to wait longer for results, it's also okay to train just 1/2-hour per day. What matters a lot, though, is sticking with it long enough to get results.
