The reason you all have seen so much of me this week is my daughter has been very sick. Since Monday she has had a high fever, congestion, vomiting and diarrhea. She has slept most of the day for two days. I am getting sips of fluid into her but the last food she ate was a banana yesterday morning. I am very concerned with dehydration. What are the signs? When do I decide she needs medical care?

This is the child who is never sick. The rest of us could be bedridden, and she would be fine... not this time... :(

((Beansprouts)) Don't know what to tell ya. Hopefully the link posted above is good. Just wanted you to know I'm thinking about you.

Thank you both. :grouphug:

Based on the information in the link, I do not think she is in danger at this time. If she is still sick tomorrow I may take her to the doc - but I am sure they will just tell me it's a virus, blah, blah, blah...

Dehydration would be the biggest concern. They could give her an IV to rehydrate her even if it is a virus that "needs to run its course". They could also give her something for the nausea like compazine. I would take her in for sure in the morning if she is no better.

How old....the younger the less able to tell you and the less functional reserve. Is she still peeing?

She's 8 1/2 but small - maybe 45 - 50 pounds. She has no weight to spare for sure. At the time I started the thread she couldn't remember the last time she peed, and she hasn't since.

Always error on the side of asking for help, nurses line or on-call doc. Those frozen pops for dehydration work well when kids can't or won't eat. Hope she feels better soon. Too many of our kids and us have been sick this winter.”

(((your poor DD)))

My DD just was discharged from the hospital with dehydration.

Is she moving around much? How are her lips? (severely chapped, cracked or bleeding?) Is her skin looking dry? Does she have tears, saliva or sweat? Dark circles, sunken eyes or puffy eyelids?

If you're worried, please have her checked out. My DD's younger, but she went from worrisome to scary in a matter of an hour or two. Even if she isn't severely dehydrated (and you don't want her to GET severe), she will feel a lot better and recover much faster if they give her fluids by IV.

Don't wait if you're really worried. Don't "guess" she's okay if you are secretly wondering about it.

She's has no energy to move, and says she feels weak. Getting dressed is exhausting. She is also complaining of muscle pain which I think is just part f the flu. Lips look dry, she has said her mouth and throat are also. She did have dark circles under her eyes.

If there is no improvement by morning I will take her in.

I don't know if you're still around this late since you're on the east coast, but I swear by Pedialyte frozen popsicles. In a pinch, you can give a few grains of salt and a tiny pinch of sugar with each sip of water to help replace the electrolytes, but the Pedialyte is better because it's formulated with the right ratio of sugars to salts. Gatorade and those types of drinks are too heavy for a sick little person. The popsicles are good because they go down slowly. Get some electrolytes in her and she should perk up quickly.

I hope she's feeling better tomorrow.

If she is having all of those dehydration symptoms and only weighs 45 pounds, I would be taking her tonight, if she were my child. That can turn bad, fast...really.

Yeh, I think I'd take her in also. I cannot imagine my 8yo being that sick. I'd feel very uncomfortable waiting another 12 hours.

I'll say also we've had such incredibly bad flu going on around here that children are being hospitalized.

If she doesn't remember the last time she peed you should bring her in. Push on her nail and see how fast the color returns. If it isn't almost immediate, she's dehydrated. I wouldn't wait.

Please take her in. My daughter (then eight) dehydrated badly enough to need IV fluids last year. She said she was tired and felt icky. She went from sick to serious in a matter of 45 minutes as I watched. She lost 4 pounds in 24 hours. It was scary. The Urgent Care we went to was wonderful and very very knowledgable.

Please, please take her in.

She is improving this morning. She peed when she got up, and has managed to keep down a glass of milk. She is even talking above a whisper :001_smile:

I think she is on the road now. Thank you all for caring about us :grouphug:

When my kids had high fevers for 5 days a couple of weeks ago - they sucked on/ate a lot of "otter pops". They also ate fruit popsicles. Being sick and feverish like that can really make them not want to eat but cold foods like that (which of course have a high liquid content!) were tolerated a lot better by them.

I have fruit popsicles, but she hasn't wanted them either. She has munched a little watermelon this morning which is an improvement. She is still exhausted and is in bed now.

I'm so glad that she is doing better! I know I was so worried about my two until I started to see that turn-around.

I did take her to the doc this afternoon. They did not tell me anything unexpected, but at least I know we are doing all the right things.

I am glad she is on the mend. And now you *know* that you are doing all the right things.

I hope she is back to her normal self soon.
