I just recently purchased this for next year. Is the student response book a must or not? I just got the book.
Also did your children excel with this program compared to other programs. Last year we used Spelling connections by Zaner - Bloser. It was alright, but he is still struggling a lot in spelling. So, after reading about this program I decided to give it a try.

No you don't HAVE to have it but it is handy. There are 3 days on one page and each day you skip to the next page so they cannot read what they wrote the day before. make sense?

I suppose you could use lined paper and just number 1-25. You wouldn't be missing out on anything.

I hope that helps

I am doing Sequential Spelling this year with my oldest (4th grade) after doing SWR with him since K. You don't need the student response book but I have it. It just saves paper and having to find a place to keep each test.

He still tests a little low for spelling but I he is slowly improving. He has seemed to inherited my lack of spelling ability and may come to rely on spell checker. I have not tried any other programs. I switched because we just didn't have time to really implement SWR as much as he needs. I don't want to devout so much of our school time to spelling. SS is quick and neither of us dread spelling time anymore.

This is nothing against SWR. My 2nd grader is still using this and doing great. He is blessed with one of those memories that remember spelling words. It would be a jump back for him to go to SS.

Michelle,
What level did you start him at? I bought the level 2 & 3. Some seems like it might be a little review, but over all it seems to run about at his level.

This is the first spelling program we have tried (my 10yods is mildly dyslexic, and I didn't want to start spelling until some of his issues started to resolve). We both really like it, and it has definitely boosted his confidence.

As to the response book, we opted to ask for the PDF file, and print it at home so we could print it anew for each new level. I think this is only available through AVKO's website.

We are in Level 1. I don't really focus a ton on the word families. I mostly use this program because he used to not want to even attempt to spell a word unless he knew how. Now he will at least try it and if it is wrong it's no biggie. I know he will get another form of it again. We also discuss some of the rules and revert back to dictation format we learned through SWR when he does miss a word.
