My crockpot has lived a long and useful life. :D We've had it for 18 years, and I have always used it frequently. The plastic lid has a crack on the inside (it hasn't spread all the way through the thick plastic - yet!). So it still keeps the heat in, but I'm wondering how long I have until replacement is mandatory.
Should I just go buy one this week while they are on sale at Kohl's? ;)
Thanks!

Of course how often do you use it? If it's a ton then go get one. I had my handle break off of the one that we used the most and the other one has it happening too. These were all plastic lids that we got for wedding gifts almost 11 years ago. My MIL gave me an AWESOME new crockpot for Christmas, so I was very blessed.:001_smile:

I use a lid from my Visions dutch oven on my crockpot. My plastic lid shattered years ago.
I say go buy a new one while they are on sale! :)

I agree...go buy one if they have one that appeals to you on sale ;)
If not..you KNOW that lid is gonna go at the WRONG/worst time, right?

Mine too. Cash crunch though so I will just use foil to help seal.:001_smile:

I say use it as long as you can to save the landfills. And money, on sale or not. And I haven't found one made here yet, so I'm waiting until I do. Oh, wait, that last one is more of a red herring.

I hadn't thought of foil - that's a great idea!

You're absolutely right. We've been living under a Murphy cloud for the last 18 months or so, so I feel certain it will go out at the worst possible time! Ha!

I would try to find a glass lid that fits your existing pot. The newer crockpots all seem to heat to higher temperatures, so often old recipes have to be adjusted -- either by adding more liquid at the beginning, or by leaving them on for a shorter period of time. Quite a few cooks have been unpleasantly surprised when a tried-and-true recipe turns out dry in a new crockpot.

That's good to know; I had no idea. Thank you!

Hmmm, I don't have a dutch oven, but I've wanted one for a long time. Maybe this is my excuse to buy that instead. Haha!

I used mine cracked for a couple of years. When it finally broke in two my MIL suggested I use my large "boiler" pot lid (since it's a large crock pot), and that works just fine.

Another thought: you might be able to find a similar pot/lid at a resale shop? As long as you're using foil anyway, it might not hurt to keep an eye out!
